Capping FPS needed to cool down GPU

Featured Replies

After SU5 i noticed i was seeing 300-600 fps in the menus or during loading. That ramped up the temps on my 3080 really fast, and it was causing CTDs everywhere, even outside of loading flights. An easy fix to this is to use a frame limiter (but not in MSFS) to cap your frames at something more realistic, like 30 or even 60. Letting your FPS spike to hundreds of frames per second is going to max your GPU out (and cook it) just sitting at the main menu. I use nvidia profiler to cap fps but i believe the nvidia control panel would work as well.

Worth a shot.

I have also found that putting the power management mode back to normal from prefer high performance in the NCP helps keep temperatures a little better for the GPU. I have seen no drop in FPS making that move.

Be very carfull with unlimited FPS if you see them sort of figures. Its more if you see 2000-3000 etc but just be carful. 🙂

The new MMO has killed 3080 & 3090 for menu FPS..no am not joking lots of youtube on it and why,  Just one. Jay2cents even made one.

Being old I did not even know what "bricked" was, when talking about GPU's

Here's a good example. I locked my FPS at 60. My temps do not skyrocket just sitting at the main screen. Now I see 50% utilization and 40 C then, and in a flight my GPU is running 5 C cooler while locked at 60 FPS. I notice zero difference. I will change power management mode back to normal as well. Thanks for that tip.

Those must be some shoddy graphics cards. No usage should be able to brick a GPU, they are designed to run at 100% load for the entirety of their warranty period

I noticed on my system that my GPU can hit 90+ C really fast if I am not using fan control software like MSI Afterburner. The other thing is, once I clamped down on the runaway FPS (i lock my FPS at 60) I noticed that not only did my GPU temps drop to from 71-71 C to 67-68 C, but my RAM dropped 5-8 C and my CPU cores dropped maybe 8-10 C. The entire system just runs cooler when you cap the FPS. By letting my FPS jump to 80+ during flight, and 600+ in menus, I was creating a ton of unnecessary heat, and that was leading to CTDs in MSFS.

Now everything is cool and stable. And... no CTDs.

Look up the probelm more and also 3080-3090 heat.

I am a little concerned at what your saying, to tell the truth more than a little, I had to have my 3080 replaced. The first signs of it going wrong was heat but i did not see GPU temp as high as 90+ but what bothers me greatly is GPU mem temp and is always seem to be way higher than GPU temp.

I was told to use GPU-Z and it was shocking to see my GPU temp was fine but my GPU mem temp it 105-115 and that is why my 3080 in the end just started CTD.

Look at this on the right, look at GPU temp and then look at GPU mem temp and this is with the new "good" 3080

What bothers be about what your saying is the road your on was the same as mine, after someone told me to use GPU-Z and I saw the crazy heat, I then used MSI and set up custom fan profiles and it did work well, but a few weeks later the CTD started and it was down hill from there. My New 3080 does not need MSI and it controles it fans 100% better than my first, its like night and day how cooler this one keeps itself.

I wish you well and hope nothing happens just look at at the right and please try it yourself and I hope you MSI has come in time.

The mem temp you see below is fine but look how high it is to GPU temp is v mem temp. All is fine as this is unlimited FPS fps test. This on my old 3080 would see mem temp over 100 for sure. With no MSI my new GPU max temp is what around 65, my new max Mem temp is around 86-88 if I run unlimted and I dont. Both are well below that what you see below. When running 30 FPS locked.

I run my monitor at 60 hz and set V-Sync on at 30, that give me a smooth, cool and stable system at 30fps, which is good enough for me, if I let the computer work uncapped I get between 55-60 fps, but I prefer to use that performance when it is needed instead of letting it go up in smoke and heat when I don't need it.

And due to the fact that I run my monitor at 60 hz, the fps never goes higher than 60 during the start up of the game either.

Interesting David. Thanks for the heads up! Using FurMark GPU Stress test, my GPU's memory heat got to 96 C so maybe this GPU is not long for this earth!? We'll see!

David, I tested it with MSFS. I am a steady 68 C GPU temp and 80-82 C GPU memory. I guess we will see how this card holds up, but at least now I know my temps are well within limits.

That sounds good. Thats around the same as my new card so fingures crossed. I wish you well.

I may be mistaken but I thought 30fps was in reference to the XBOX.
