I almost forgot how to quit MSFS!...

Featured Replies

Well, this is a bit of a story - a bit of a long read, but with a nice positive ending for me at least!

After a tortuous time with the SU5 and hotfix updates (each of which made things slightly better), I was on the verge of giving up, with constant CTD's, some after only a minute of flying, one after about 20 minutes (my record for SU5), and one even while the sim was paused!   I never got to quit out of MSFS with SU5 - it would always CTD on me first.

I wont go through all of the usual checks and stages I went through, CPU, GPU temperatures, RAM clocks back to standard, empty Community folder etc. etc. etc. except I had all but given up.
Just to say I have been a PC system builder since 1995, and I have never had so much trouble with CTD's.

Well, last night, I got fed up and went for broke.  MY PC works fine with all other titles, and I can't remember a CTD in any of the others.
So I went back into the BIOS, CPU (water cooled 8086K) back to 5.1 Ghz, RAM back to XMP setting (3600), and when booted into Windows, I picked a moderate overclock for my GPU (1080Ti, at 1633 GPU and 11500 memory).

After testing a few games for about 40 minutes.  I decided to give MSFS a go for old times sake.  Before I loaded up, I put all my payware back, and all of my freeware into the community folder using the excellent addons linker.
If you wonder why I did this, it is because I wanted to put MSFS back to how it was pre-SU5, and then wait for WU6 with the coming CTD fixes.  But after doing this, I decided to give it one last go anyway...

So anyway, in the end I was in MSFS for over four hours without a CTD, or any other kind of issue - yes, I was amazed as well!
In that time I was in the Caribbean, Sedona, but mainly the Austrian Alps (with freeware DEM at 20m). My longest flight was about 1 hour 20 minutes.

I did at least 3 flights between Orbx Zell-am-See and Orbx Salzburg, using different routes / different valleys.
I used the Default C172 Classic, the Piaggio 149 (which seems to be perfect in SU5), the Bagolu Bush C172, and a lot of time in the new Aviat Husky, which I quite like, and seems good for the money.

I did a lot more, going back to the main map screen occasionally, loading different scenery and aircraft etc.  And I was in and out of the config menu, testing by going between 2k at 130% and 4k at 80% etc.  all this time, MSFS was super smooth locked at 30 fps, and there was not one issue, not one CTD.  (LODs on 300 / 300 by the way)

I finally went to bed at gone 2am in the morning, with my eyes stinging, and almost forgetting how to shut MSFS down .  I had one of the best nights ever in MSFS. I was basically stunned that it had lasted so well without a CTD.

So, what changed?  Obviously it would be good to know as it might help others.
All I know is the following...  After booting up,

  • I installed the latest Nvidia drivers (471.68).  On this occasion, I used a program I had never heard of before, but I heard about (possibly on this forum).  It is called NVCleanstall and it seems rather good!
  • I also excluded all of the Garmin addons (G1000, 750, 530 etc.) including the new NXi which I love, but decided to uninstall it from the marketplace. (It will return!)
  • I installed newer Saitek panel drivers I found on the Logitech site (December instead of October 2020).  I did this as sometimes my LED autopilot window doesn't light up.
  • I also put in Bijans latest tree pack for the hell of it (6.05 I believe?).
  • Just for luck, I also closed down MSFS after uninstalling the Garmin NXi and rebooted Windows again.

Other than this, I really don't know what has happened.  I finally settled on 4k at 75%, nearly all ultra settings (clouds at high as I like them better), and GPU temp was about 75C, and utilisation 70% on average.  I don't think it ever dropped below 30fps, not one stutter, which is absolutely superb performance from a 1080Ti.

  • I never opened the ATC window at all, and never responded (even by pressing the 1 key).
  • I never altered weather from 'few clouds' setting.  I do use live weather, but not last night at all.
  • Obviously multiplayer was off, and AI traffic was off (as recommended at the moment).

I intend to test again at the weekend (I have to go out tonight), and I will report back to see if this situation continues, and I will add anything else I can remember.
I am planning a flight across the UK with the new Orbx landmarks - that should be a good couple of hours - here's hoping!   Until then, I am not messing with anything!

Very happy for you mate, nothing is more frustrating than CTD.

Yes, even though I am not sure how.  But in any case, I really enjoyed it. Onwards and upwards!

Super ! Glad to see you up in the skies again.

In my uninformed opinion getting the modded Garmin off the way was the key to success.

I had a little bit of an opposite experience this morning - hadn't had a CTD since the whole SU5 and hotfix transition period.  Today I finally found myself dumped when opening the World Map.  I zoomed to the departure airport to look at the possible ramp positions and.. bang.

After restarting, I was able to set up my flight.  After transitioning to the cockpit for start-up the instrument panel was messed up.  Thinking it may have been a livery issue, I went back to the planner and changed.  Sure enough, when I spawned back to the departure and entered the cockpit everything was fine.  I threw the 1st switch and... bang.  On the desktop.

I thought that the first livery incompatibility issue may have still caused this to happen, so I restarted, used the 2nd livery again and all went well - had a great flight.  The adventure continues...

MSFS keeps track of your experiences and if your having too much fun it will shut you down.  lol

I think the story here is the minimum addons you can keep on your fs2020 the better, I have never had a CTD but have had it freeze when moving from 2d to VR when I press cntrl tab, but that was only on 2 or 3 occasions, but I do not have many addons in my community folder.
