So, I normally only use VR. However I do have a beefy system, and a really nice monitor. So, I thought I’d try 2D with track IR again. After all the recent updates etc…

My god, it’s like butter, and it looks absolutely stunning! I’m pulling 60-70fps with gsync enabled and literally every setting on ultra. I am seriously  considering dumping VR again now. I’m so serious about it, I’m thinking about picking up a LG OLED C1 77” display with g-sync premium. I think the higher screen coupled with trackIR should be good. Anyone got any experience with a screen that size sitting right in front of it?

Ian.........🙂 TrackIR works of 120hz so I find it like you stunning but lock at 40 fps as I dont have your full gsync, Enjoy! Glad you have found a great way to enjoy again.

Am getting a LG  OLED C1 55" on Thursday hehe but thats not for PC.

Plug your PC in to it, I dare you 😉

I use a 49 inch ultrawide and it is incredible.  Just wish MSFS had proper multi monitor/FOV support...

So, I decided what I will do is, place the big tv on an adjustable stand, so that I can move my desk away from it so that it is at the optimal height and distance from me. Doing this I wonder if trackIR works over a 3 meter distance?

Ian, I've experimented with such distances before (been using TIR since Version 1 in 2003!).  I've found that such distances will work, but only in a darkened room.  In other words, I found that light sensitivity issues were exacerbated the further you are from the sensor unit.  When I used a projector in the past, I think I was around 2.5 - 3m from the sensor at maximum.  It worked but a little smoothness was lost.  I was able to counter that to a degree with the smoothness slider in the TIR software.  Of course, while using a projector, I was in a very dark room!  I'd decribed distances like that as non-optimal, but workable if the benefits outweigh the challenges.

Of course, this was in a house in Toronta with huge windows and lots of natural sunlight. Here in my attic in Durham City, with only a small sky light and cloudier English weather, sunlight is generally less of a problem! 😄

Yes, I have blackout curtains in my office that I will just draw during play time, so, hopefully that eliminates any light issues. And we have no sun forecast now up in Newcastle until April 🙂

I dont see why you have to have the TrackIR far away or even in your case on the TV, just place it around the same place you do now even on the desk lower as long as you see it working in the TrackIR solf wear your good to go.

Funny Track IR story.  Was doing a Porsche Sim race one night and for some reason my TIR was going nuts and having all sorts of uncontrolled movements.  I dimmed the lights, tried to rip down anything behind that could have been reflecting all to no avail.  Only after my race when I walked upstairs and looked in the mirror did I realize the sweatshirt I was wearing had a reflective strip on each sleeve and when I must have raised my arms to turn the wheel the pullover sent TIR berserk... Lesson learned LOL

When I was looking for a large-format screen, I paid close attention to the pixellation at various screen sizes at my intended viewing distance (~38").  When you fill a larger area with the same number of pixels, the pixels themselves must also increase in size.  55 inch was the sweet spot...anything larger, and the pixels, especially in text, were becoming very noticeable.  I could move the screen back a foot or so and then a 65" screen was OK, but truth be told, at the longer viewing distance I gained nothing over the 55-incher in terms of a wider FOV.

A 70+ incher would be really interesting...but only up-close and at 8K resolution I think.  I think we're still at least a few generations of GPUs away from being able to pull off 8K even at 30 Hz refresh rate.

So, you stuck with 55 inch?

Ordinarily I exclusively fly VR, with a G2, and am more than happy with the experience I’m getting. However, I also have a 4k projector that I can use to knock up a 120” image. I keep meaning to hook the PC up to it, just for sh!ts and giggles, but haven’t got around to it yet. But I will 🤠

My eyes just can’t deal with the low resolution. I too have a G2, but it feels like I’ve taken my glasses off! Back to 2D for me. Sure I’ll miss the immersion, but the better picture quality and trackIR makes up for it. Plus I can use all my peripherals again without feeling like Stevie wonder.

When I take the HMD off, and see how much better of a job the monitor is doing, I do get a bit wistful. But, for me, I get no sensation of flying whatsoever when running flat. No feeling of speed, nor height nor scale. I look forward to the days when VR gets a much higher resolution at sensible frame rates, but will work with what I’ve got for now. I just cannot go back to pancake. I fully agree with the Stevie Wonder statement though 😂
