Tried again…

So, I normally only use VR. However I do have a beefy system, and a really nice monitor. So, I thought I’d try 2D with track IR again. After all the recent updates etc…

My god, it’s like butter, and it looks absolutely stunning! I’m pulling 60-70fps with gsync enabled and literally every setting on ultra. I am seriously  considering dumping VR again now. I’m so serious about it, I’m thinking about picking up a LG OLED C1 77” display with g-sync premium. I think the higher screen coupled with trackIR should be good. Anyone got any experience with a screen that size sitting right in front of it?

My screen is nowhere near that big, (just!) a 34” g-sync 3440x1440 but sitting about 70cm away with Track IR and the room darkened gives me a better experience than poor resolution VR. At least that was my experience when I gave up my RiftCV1. I’ve been in two minds about a Reverb2 but I’ve seen enough people saying it’s still not there yet to keep me on the fence.

I don’t doubt that VR is the future for simming but at the moment I’m not hearing a general evangelism for the current generation of headsets to believe it’s worth another punt.

77 inch screen...  I had to read that twice... I am sitting in front of a 27 inch monitor.  🙂

I'm sitting in front a 55" and its pretty immersive, but 77" sounds nice. I would go bigger, but space is an issue for me.

I have a G2. The resolution is just too poor for me. Strains my eyes. So, I want to enjoy myself, not be in discomfort. The performance is also pretty poor, compared to 2D. I do not doubt that the immersion is unbeatable, however, the sim in 2D looks absolutely glorious. And It’s butter smooth. I was actually shocked. Last time I had a sim as smooth as that was vulkan on XP11.

So, yeah, I’m gonna get a massive screen and use trackIR. It’s gotta be worth a shot. These LG C1 OLED seem to be the cherry on the cake tv’s with G-sync premium. So, might as well try the 77”.
Just concerned with sitting so close to it, and wondered if anyone had any experience? I’ll be using TrackIR, so, moving around the cockpit is no issue.

Let me know your experience when you do get it. I'm curious. What about burn in issues with OLED displays? I've read and heard several things regarding that and that's one thing that's preventing me from getting an OLED TV.

I’m not sure how TrackIR works with crazy-big screens. Wouldn’t your eyeline be stuck to the top half of the screen so the reader on top of the screen is in line with the clip?

They’ve got anti burn setting on them now apparently. I’ve read a few articles and it all seems good on this particular model.

You can attach them to the side, right? Must be some way around it

Good point. Never tried it but can’t think of any reason it wouldn’t be possible. But then wouldn’t your eyeline need to be on whichever side you’ve attached it…🤪?

Hopefully you can try before you buy.

Haha yeah. Anyone any experience with this?

I have mine attached to the top. Attaching it sideways doesn't work for me. Unless you rig it somehow. But then I'm not sure it would be positioned properly to even work correctly. I think it's meant to be attached to the top or bottom only.

So what is G-Sync Premium? Does the TV have a g-sync module embedded to provide g-sync down to the lower frame rates?

The specs I see for the LG 77 C1 in Aus, list it as G-Sync Compatible.

Interesting, I too stated on this forum several months ago that I did not believe that VR was a mature enough technology for the flight simming environment ... yet.  I was roundly pummeled for that statement, probably due to the fact that I do not own any VR units.  So, I follow your comments with curiosity.
