In just over a month I'll be 88 and I know my driving skills aren't what they used to be.

You are fortunate to be living in a relatively small town Noel. I'm soon to be reaching 74 myself, but regret having been 'trapped' into living here in NW Indiana so close to the miserable traffic of Chicagoland, where driving on any of the many Interstate highways is a real nail-biter experience!

Fortunately I don't have to travel much across the border into the wildlands of Chicago traffic. I've managed to map out alternate routes to those destinations I must travel to that completely avoids the multi-lane deathtraps of high-speed race tracks.

What is truly ironic is that by taking the regular streets at the right time of day, I have cut my travel time by as much as 20 minutes, with hardly any stress at all. 😃

I would argue that driving too slowly on a motorway can be almost as much of a hazard as driving too fast. For example, anyone doing 30 mph on a motorway should not be on it in the first place (unless they have a word not allowed good reason for doing so). I have also seen someone in the middle lane doing a steady 45mph. That really is not acceptable, and actually rather dangerous.

Agree, excessively slow is dangerous. Somewhat slower can't be and shouldn't be prohibited.

Most drivers can move in and out of traffic without issue but we have all seen far to many times the chain reaction that occurs in hyway traffic if only a single driver needs to hit the brakes.

That's caused by tailgating which is illegal.

Next you're going to come back and tell me if some are driving over the speed limit then everyone should drive over the speed limit because those driving the speed limit have become hazards.

I've been driving for over 70 years and have only had 1 accident.  I was driving the speed limit on a foggy day and hit a truck that was crossing the road because the fog prevented me from seeing it in time.

From your posts I gather you are a speeder who has no patience for people driving slower than you are driving..

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

There are some motorways in the UK that would give you a severe case of IBS. And I mean IBSd.

The worst experience I had was near RAF Cosford. Was on my way to the RAF Museum. My god the road was dreadful. Narrow than normal motorway lanes and full of absolute speeds freak maniacs. It was a scary experience.

Put me off going back to the museum.

I know.  We were driving to Maryland once and I decided to drive I-80.  What a nightmare Chicagoland was.

Although Chicago is one of my favorite cities.  When I was going to weather school at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, just north of Champaign.  Spent many a weekend in Chicago.

I would suppose many rural roads in the UK are left over frm the horse and carriage days and even the knights on horseback days.

No, actually I'm not going to say that all because that is nonsense. I'm not a speeder either, cant even remember the last ticket i got,  however i have been caught up in waayyyy to many chain reactions due to drivers driving below the flow of traffic. Notice Im saying Flow, that is the key word here.

And a sparsely populated part of the country.

The highway to Ruidoso is 4 lane all they up the 70 miles from Roswell.  Traffic is very light.  I might get passed the 5 or 6 cars on the way up.  The speed limit is 70 until you get to Hondo canyon where it drops to 65.  I drive 65 all the way and anybody who wants to pass me can pull out into the passing lane a half mile before he gets to my car.  It's 90 miles east to Tatum.  90 miles north to Vaughn.  90 miles south to Carlsbad with Artesia in the way.  Our north-south highway had little traffic as does our east-west highway except on week-ends when the Texans are on the way up to horse track an casinos in Ruidoso.

If I lived in a City like Chicago I wouldn't own a car,  I'd use public transportation.  But I can't imagine living in a city anymore unless I get too feeble to care for myself and my daughter in Denver takes me in or puts me in a nursing home.

I don't think driving 10 under is that bad.   I have much more concern over these nitwits that roll right up on people at high speed, typically on their phone or even texting while driving.

No problem here.  My phone stays at home 90% of the time.  And I even have my car set up so if I had my phone with me (there is charger I can lay it on in the center console) I can answer or start a call with a button on the steering wheel and listen and talk through the car speakers.

But I don't want to be bothered with a phone that T-Mobile wants to make part of my anatomy.  Calls can wait.  If I miss a call it will be noted on the screen when I get back home.  Nothing is more important now than it was 30 years ago before cell phones were invented.

I have not yet been assimilated into the continuum.

A few years ago I was on my way to the adult center.  It's walking distance from my house.  As I was approaching the front door a lady in a full size sedan was trying to back into a parking slot.  The hit the fender of an adjacent car.  Without missing a beat on her phone she got out, looked at the damage, got back in her car, and drove off.  I took down her license number and told the receptionist at the desk what happened.

Well yes, and in non rural locations the same often applies. Lots of older properties from a time before cars were invented that aren't moving to make way for wider roads.

Concrete jungle in many places though, acomodating our tin cans on wheels.

but about half-way to the farm branched off the two-lane and from that point onwards was a single lane, bi-directional dirt road! It was not too bad in nice weather, but became a rutted and slippery, muddy nuisance during the rainy season...

A common occurrence in the rural parts of Guernsey is single lane, nowhere to pass so you have to reverse into some posh persons drive, and chunks of granite you are likely to hit strategically located at the side of the road. I was driving with my daughter down one such road, only just wide enough for a UK Ford Fiesta, and there was an almighty crash as I hit a chunk of granite. Low profile tires made it sound like a bomb had gone off. Luckily and surprisingly no damage.

Don't think I like low profile tyres. Might look sexy but totally impractical when you have to drive down such roads and frequently bump up curbs to let buses pass.

Yep, that's right, full sized busses drive down our roads which is a bit daft, Great service though, one Guernsey quid (we have our own notes and coins) to anywhere on the island.

In terms of our currency... UK notes and coins are accepted here but take Guernsey notes and coins back to the UK and no way, not accepted. I recall the banks wont swap them either. 🙄

I don’t have a problem with drivers going very slow and within their comfort zone.  I do have a problem with erratic drivers, tailgaters, and drivers that do crazy stuff because they might miss there turning or exit … how hard can it be to just drive on to the next turn light or exit and do it safely?

When I was back n the UK, tailgaters used to engender in me an urge to behave like Mike Tyson. And the nut jobs that enter the motorway and then just drift right across three lanes to the fast lane.

Nut jobs on islands as well, who don't give a ---- about which lane they are supposed to use and think its an awesome idea to turn right in the left hand lane.

Err... I get scared at 60 in the UK and 30 in Guernsey. Did you car have an Alcubierre warp drive?

At least you're fine 👍

Well, a lesson - I am sure you will get extra careful under similar circumstances from now on....
