smh - is it just me?

Featured Replies

Theres an internet acronym that I often see being used... it's 'smh'.  Acronyms are often new and unknown to me and I like to figure them out without looking them up.

'smh' seemed quite easy as its what Dave Lister used to always say 'smeggin h***'

is it just me?  🙂

I know what its supposed to be (after looking it up).  I just still hear Dave Lister when I see it.  And personally I think its better and funnier.

Good old Kryton. I still remember fondly the double Polaroid.

😯 Yikes, don't take that the wrong way. Err... or that. I'll shut up.

I grew up in Canada learning the Queen's English...now I'm finding myself having to learn the "Urban Dictionary".

I find the increasing use of acronyms annoying and frustrating as I think it is simply a form of laziness. I respond to this laziness by the same formula in that I am too lazy to look it up.  I either simply do not respond to anything sent to me containing any thing other than LOL. I lied with that statement as I do sometimes respond with a complete paragraph containing only unspaced letters which do not make sense.  Same thing to me.

However, I am also "old school" and was taught to read and write in english.  This new form of communication (and I use the word loosely) is, I think,  born from teenagers locked in bedrooms on mobile phones "communicating" with their peers.  I think that, that, is just fine for them, but they are not going to force me to adapt to their "lower" standards of communications.

I know this is probably a severe and unreasonable reaction, but it is what I feel.

Language always changes. (unless its dead, of course)

Even "The queens English" as spoken by modern day Americans and others is the result of mixes and merges and countless contractions over the coarse of centuries, of the exact same sort you're protesting.

I would love to have said this ... so very relevant, straight forward, and oh so relevant.

I realize and understand what you are saying here. What I am talking about, however, is not the result of mixes, merges and countless contractions over centuries. This has, basically, occurred to this extent, in our lifetime.  I have enough trouble trying to sort out spelling and grammar without additional trauma. What gets me though, is the fact that, I spend enough time on Google, to get information (in English) to not need to spend unwarranted time trying to find out what a person is trying to say.  Further, this is a forum (as are others) with multinational consumers who are not native English speakers. Can you imagine the difficulties these people face trying to sort it all out.

Translation of the weird speak:

Greetings and Salutations to you!

Don't quote me on this, but seriously folks I don't know who cares anyway to text with lists of acronyms.

In your opinion, its easy and pretty darn quick... I don't think so.

In my humble opinion, an acronym rich environment is another day in hell. To be honest. its fouled up beyond all recognition and too much to handle. Give it a rest, please! Keep it simple, stupid.

Just my two cents.

Our culture and language and pretty much everything else are changing at an ever increasing rate.....

Certainly my parents seemed half-prehistoric to me, and my grandfather was culturally from an almost completely different universe.

I talk to my little niece now, and when she speaks of and her friends "Pronouns", and other touchstones of her generation, I get glimpses of an emerging culture that threatens to eventually leave me just as much at sea as my grandfather would have been with my peers.

Not too surprising then, to see the language, given impetus by the evolving digital paradigms, changing just as fast.

I think my generation was kind of raised to expect that.

I anticipate that my little nieces children, at some far future date, will likely seem very, very alien to me....

And so it goes.....
