Title correction

I paired my 3090 with a 12600k a couple of days ago. Had an old 2600k from 2011 that was still going strong but had a hard time with dense sceneries in xp11, p3d and msfs, often going down to 14-16 or even worse occasionally. Now I'm sitting happy with V sync on and 97% stable 30 fps in 4k with pretty much everything maxed in msfs (Flybywire), and pretty  high settings in xp 11(FlyJsim stuff) and p3d(fslabs/pmdg).

Have a lot of games on steam and all of them that were giving me trouble before are now smooth, I cap everything at 60 on my pc since it seems to solve some problems with older games.

And yes, I had a couple of months of the 2600k paired with the 3090 which is of course complete overkill :) But I got it secondhand some months ago (because reasons) for a slight discount, didn´t want to pass the opportunity by since I was always going to buy the new Alder lake when it came out so I went for it.

As far as I´m concerned it´s a great purchase, especially for mainly single threaded gaming/simming.

I have got a ASUS TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS WIFI DDR4 motherboard ordered and on the way (hopefully?!?) but then I will have to wait until after Christmas before I purchase my i5 12600K Alder Lake. I will have a longer wait until I am able to replace my jolly old EVGA GTX 1070Ti SC Black. But never mind I will manage as it is a VERY good card. Will also have to get a new AIO. What sort of cooling system have you got Jon?

You have the exact same motherboard as me, didn´t see any reason to do ddr5 after reading reviews.

I have an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II cooler. It needs a bracket to be compatible with the 1700 socket but 

it´s relatively cheap and does the job well. I´m not overclocking anything since I´m happy with my frames.

Everything else is on air. Very happy with the setup, my 2600k lasted for almost 11 years, hope this one lasts

a long time too, enjoy your new pc!

I'm probably going to build around the 12700k sometime next year.  Atleast that's the plan

@micstatic -- good choice. Many YT reviews say this is the CPU for gaming since it is significantly cheaper, runs cooler and the performance delta between it and the 12900 is not commensurate with the price delta. Also, you might already know this, but there are a lot of cheaper motherboards about to launch for this socket.

I have decided (I think!!?) to get the MSI MEG CORELIQUID S280 Liquid CPU Cooler which supports L1700 out of the box.  Rather expensive like the m/board but what the heck. Do you think the 12700 would be a better choice of cpu for MSFS 2020?

I already have the bits for a 3090 and 10900K based build, been on the floor by the side of me for months. That will suffice for now but will probably join you on the 1200 extravaganza next year. Although the 12900K. And probs DDR5 by then.

I don't know. I am not a MSFS user but a P3D user.

Having read the link below it seems that the i5 12400 might be even better for MSFS and gaming in general?

It seems we do not need those E cores for gaming.

I've been beyond thrilled with my move to the 12700k.  MSFS and P3D.  Previously had a 9700k

No definitive answer exists. The upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D, targeted for gaming, outperforms the 12900K according to AMD.

Great to hear! I’m building a system in the next week or two with a 12700K, 3070. Ordered the Asus ROG Strix motherboard yesterday. Coming from a 6700K/1070Ti and really looking forward to seeing MSFS on the new system.
