Triangular Buildings / Photogrammetry

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I don't have a before comparison, since this is how hit looked when I loaded in. I'll try another area too.

Well, everything seems to be working fine now...but just for fun, here's a first time load vs a second load:

I guess the point is, if you do experience triangular houses/buildings, turn on RC and reload the area.

Only if you fly on the area for the 2nd time and the 1st time the PG was loaded correctly.

If the data is not in the cache and your connection is slow, the cache is useless and probably harmful because the next time you fly there it will contain low resolution versions of the assets. Nobody knows if the sim actually checks what version of the PG is in the cache, the feature is totally undocumented.

2nd time and all the times afterwards. It's very helpful when you fly often in certain areas, otherwise it won't help that much.

This is wrong.  PG is a form of mesh and, just like mesh, it has LODs.  The various LODs for an area will depend upon how close you are to it and so you will need to visit an area a few times and you will need to be within a certain distance of the PG so that it loads at the maximum detail possible (the highest LOD).  This is why buildings will appear flat at first but get filled out over time.

This is not to say that the PG has no 'melted buildings'.  Some areas are better than others and everyone's tolerance of 'melted' is different.  But it is NOT the case that there is one low resolution data set.  Its just mesh and thats why sometimes you see triangular shapes until you fly closer and the higher resolution data gets downloaded and hopefully stored in your rolling cache.  If you are not using the cache then you will likely always see triangular shapes.

Most of the time also see normal size buildings when getting closer to them and I have no cache enabled…

Or...keep the Rolling Cache up all the time, that's how I operate my sim and would recommend to everybody.

Have you followed the discussion? The point is exactly that, in case the connection is bad, the lowest LOD remains visible even when you approach the object. In that case, the rolling cache will contain only the bad LOD regardless of the distance of the observer from the object, and does the algorithm take that into account the next time you fly there and the connection is better? Nobody knows because the feature is totally undocumented. They just say "yes, keep it on" because evidently it's in their interest to save bandwidth.

Personally I have done many tests and keeping the RC on with my 600 MBps connection only increases stutters with no benefits on graphics quality, so I keep it off.

This is where you are mistaken.  Higher resolution files (higher LODs) are different files that cover a different area.  If those higher resolution files don't exist in the cache, then the sim will try and download them and if the cache is turned on then it will store them.

I really don't know why some people insist that their superfast internet connection means they should never have to wait for files from MS.  Its like saying Flash Gordon never waits at the Dept of Motor Vehicles.  Your local machine is (should be) more reliably fast than your connection to the MS servers and because of that, having the rolling cache on is a good idea.

I get a warning message if I try and delete my Rolling Cache. Can someone explain what (if any) danger there is in deleting that file?

No.  There is no danger in deleting the file.  It's optional.   But I really think that it's best to run the sim with the rolling cache on and 32 GB is a decent size.

Note that the file actually should be deleted and replaced after any major change to the software such as a world update. Even if you install a bunch of addon airports it may be a good idea to replace it but I dont really know.

To me it seems that when downloaded tiles are immediately used in the scenery everything will run smoother than when it also has to store those tiles in the cache…  One action instead of two.

Only with a slow IN connection I can imagine that you would like to use the manual cache for your departure airport and your arrival airport.

On my fast pc’s with fast IN connections caches off is smoother than caches on….

just curious:  Do you ever see triangular buildings in the distance?
