New TrackIR Alternative for MSFS 2020

Recommended Posts

Nice to see other players in the game other than the monopoly that trackir had….. not that there is anything wrong with trackir, but options are good to have!

I use the Track IR Track Clip. You could drop it from a 3 story building, and it wouldn't hurt it at all.

I agree. I have been using the simple TrackIR hat clip below for years without a problem. It's basically just a thin piece of metal with three reflective surfaces. I have made a few for others to use with some reflective tape. These home made clips attach to a hit brim with a common spring clip.

It works great, and some years ago there was a survey comparing this one to the one that has LEDs, and the vast majority of people said they saw no advantage to the LED model, that you have to wear a headset to use. I wear a visor type cap that they sell on the Track IR website, and most of the time I forget I have it on.

Is the Puck compatible with the TrackIR sensor? I assume it is. I already have TrackIR but I hate the wire on the ProClip so it would be great to go wireless.

Yes it is I use my puck with the TrackIR 5 sensor.

Cool, just ordered one. Are you using it with headphones? Trying to figure out what I'll need to attach it. I was thinking sticky magnets.

The Puck comes with Velcro strips which, however, didn't stick enough on my headphones. I settled with the following solution which has been working for some months now:Puck_2.thumb.jpg.79ff8c0bdbc3660e5e0a86c5e7537813.jpg

The white stuff is called "Powerstrips". The red clip is probably well-known. This way I can easily attach or release it as required.

Kind regards, Michael

Interesting! I love my TrackIR but I don't like the cable of the TrackIR Clip Pro and I also don't like way you have to fasten it: I find attaching the device to my headphone (which I always wear) rather cumbersome and quite often it simply falls of it. Bad design.

So if I buy this Puck (I presume I only need this: https://grassmonkeysimulations.com/product/puck-ir-no-camera/ ?) it will work with my TrackIR device on the monitor AND the TrackIR software just like that? Right away? No need to do anything with the TrackIR software or change settings? It's as easy as that?

One question though: it seems to me this Puck is a LOT heavier than the TrackIR Clip Pro... the latter isn't really sturdy (if that's the word) but it certainly is light! The Puck, with an AA-battery in it, seems rather heavy to me...? Won't it drag down my headphone to one side all the time?

I find zero issues wearing it on my right side.

I will weigh my puck when I get a chance

It's 83 g, including the battery and the clip I attached.

Kind regards, Michael

I have (2) pucks and both with headphones (Velcro to side)

For us Yanks that's about 3 ounces.  Thanks to the OP. I'm gonna try this system out 👍

There is also TrackHat which is also good choice.

Agreed. I bought the wireless LED emitter from TrackHat and have been using it with my TrackIR for a few years now with no issues.

There’s already a lot of good tips and details in this thread regarding the Grass Monkey system. 👍🏻

I would also recommend taking the time to watch Roger’s own videos on the website.

He explains the system very well and at a pace where even I can follow 😀

... and being a user myself I did not feel any over-selling once I got the product and tried it.

Wow @udidwht - that must be some serious tracking with a Puck on each side of your headphones! 😉😂 My wife thinks I look silly already with just one Puck! Sorry couldn’t help it 🙏🏻
