DHL 757: Runway excursion to  San Jose apt.

From The Aviation Herald:

" A DHL Air Boeing 757-200, registration HP-2010DAE performing flight D0-7216 from San Jose (Costa Rica) to Guatemala City (Guatemala) with 2 crew, was climbing out of San Jose's runway 07 at about 09: 40L (15 : 40Z) when the crew stopped the climb at about FL210 declaring Mayday due to a hydraulic failure.

The aircraft entered a hold while the crew worked the related checklists. The aircraft subsequently returned for an approach to runway 07 about 50 minutes after departure. After touchdown at 10: 24L (16: 24Z) the crew lost control of the aircraft, which spun around and went off the runway causing the aircraft to break up into two parts, both main gear struts collapsed. The crew was able to exit the aircraft without serious injuries. "

The same DHL Aero Expreso Boeing 757-200, registration HP-2010DAE  on Feb 11th 2022 performing flight D5-5218 from Guatemala City (Guatemala) to Mexico City (Mexico), was on approach to Mexico City when the crew reported flight control problems and entered a hold to configure the aircraft. The crew subsequently advised they needed to perform a flaps up landing and requested emergency services on stand by. The aircraft landed on Mexico City's runway 23L at a higher than normal speed (about 185 knots over ground), vacated the runway and stopped on the high speed turn off B6 clear of the runway. Following checks by emergency services the aircraft was towed to the apron.

A listener on frequency reported the crew initially reported flight control problems and requested to orbit in position to configure the aircraft, then advised they were conducting a flapless landing and requested emergency services in position.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 56 hours before returning to service.

It's amazing how the airframe appears to be made of paper in videos like this (and it almost is, considering how light the materials are) and yet how much force it can tolerate in the sky (turbulence, wings supporting the entire weight of the aircraft, thrust from the engines, etc...).

Glad the pilots made it out - any landing you can walk away from after a hydraulic failure is a complete success.

Stick a fork in that 757,it's done...

Yes indeed Adrian. Strip it for parts, and have a bargain basement sale.

Sad to see that is my favorite Boeing Airliner and I like the DHL Livery, glad they made it out

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

No serious injuries or deaths and that's great!

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Wow, DHL really do go all out to ensure those deliveries get there on time don't they? 🤣

They can unload the rear cargo hold quicker, without even using high loader, thanks to that gear collapse making everything slide down right next to the cargo door exit and the exit now being at ground level. Doing a Tokyo Drift straight onto the ramp instead of wasting time taxying off the runway will really things up quite a bit too.

This has really thrown down the gauntlet to Fed Ex and UPS.

Nessun ferito grave o morte ed è fantastico!

Fortunately for the pilots the plane did not catch fire, considering that the 757 does not have a fuel dump device in flight and that after take off the plane returned to the apt in about 50 minutes, so with a lot of fuel in the tanks, there is also to consider the fact, obviously I don't know whether it was wanted by the pilots or due to the failure, that the plane exited on the right of the runway while another serious situation would have occurred if it went out on the left and therefore on the apron of the apt with the presence of other aircraft, personnel, emergency vehicles and airport vehicles.

Those pilots really had it together, and who cares about the plane.I hope they had extra underclothing with them. Hey Chock:  A contemporary version of the Canadair CL-44 turboprop with a hinged tail.

From the raising dust looks like the engines were producing considerable forward thrust up to after the collapse, may be the pilots didn't know thrust reveser deployment got disabled due to the hydraulic problem and deployed it that can also be heard from the rumble, worsening the situation. Then perhaps with no stop in sight and unable to understand the constant or increase in speed, nearing the runway end they decide to turn it around to stop it.

I hope they went home, sat down with their favorite adult beverage  double the strength. and mellow out.
