From one normal restart to another all settings are gone

Featured Replies

I just restarted MSFS and it loaded the first-launch screens, addons are still there but all settings are lost, including controls.

Are they stored somewhere else? MS Store version....

Why is something like that even happening?

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

I had same thing happen yesterday. What file are these settings stored in for the Store version, I have a backup drive.

Bobsk8,
I posted this in one of your other topics on this issue last night.  For my MSFS  MS Store installation the controls settings are located in a series of sub-folders at the following location. I back up that wgs folder, all inclusive of its sub-folders.  For Steam installations the location is similar in the installation path, ex: .....\SystemAppData\wgs.

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData\wgs

I also routinely backup my "UserCfg,opt" file in this folder.  Corresponding Steam installation of  ....LocalCache\ should be in a similar named folder.

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\

They should make this a sticky somewhere. I just took the user.cfg from my Macrium backup drive and replaced the one I made this morning after the settings reset from Asobo. That should work.

OK, at least the key bindings were still there and accessible by selecting the "keyboard/mouse/joystick" profiles instead of "default". Graphics and sound settings I had to set up again though.

Best is to take photos of your current option screens so you can save time and put everything the way it were again.

I discovered something about the UserCfg.opt file this last couple of days. I wanted to return all my setting to what they were before Asobo decided to delete everyone of them, so I used the Usercfg.opt file  that I had stored with macrium on a storage drive that was from last week, and copied it to replace the new Usercfg file that I had created after the original was deleted. Naturally, I deleted the current one, coped and pasted the backup file, and thought I was good to go. Now I noticed that some of my Graphics settings didn't look like they used to. I went and examined the setting that were now being used by MSFS, and compared them to what I had on my backup drive, and MSFS had changed them. I now had the settings  that were created after everything was deleted. I finally had to go into the adjust menu in MSFS, and adjust everything, and now I have the correct settings. Apparently if you just drop another USER.cfg file into MSFS, and it doesn't match what Asobo has stored in the cloud, it just replaces them....

They store them in the cloud because in theory you can load msfs on any device you happen to be sitting in front of, regardless of where you are and your settings will follow you.

i9-10850K, ASUS TUF GAMING Z490-PLUS (WI-FI), 32GB G.SKILL DDR4-3603 / PC4-28800, GIGABYTE RTX5080 16GB WF OC 3 FAN running 3440x1440

I just got a weird message asking which UI I want to load. There was a small update. Then just like others mentioned all controls gone, logbook gone. Setting up the bravo is a bit of a pain! Restarted and this time selected cloud. All came back! Never seen that before though!

I have steam, the path to the controller profiles on mine is the default location where Steam put them originally:

C:\Steam\userdata\94959374\1250410\remote

The folders with numbers for names can vary the numbers on different people's computers (so I"ve been told). You have to look for the numbered folder under Steam\userdata which contains files of the type:
inputprofile_0551949504

Those strange long filenames notwithstanding are just text files and can be edited in notepad. The words in the file will tell you which profile it is (the name you gave to the profile in MSFS when you created it). The words will also tell you every command that has been assigned in the profile. To remind you of all your assignments.

What MSFS should have is a image generator that shows a picture of your controller and prints every command assigned on that hats and buttons and axis. The CH brand controllers have a CH Control Manager that creates images like that and you can print them out or view them.
