Nichelle Nichols, 'Star Trek' actress, dies at 89

Featured Replies

There's always a strange feeling of melancholy when something that was or is so intrinsically associated with your past goes away forever. Nichelle Nichols herself by all accounts seems to have had a life well lived, as she and her co-stars had opportunities to go places and see things that they might never have had the chance to otherwise, had they never found themselves connected forever to a strange little show that became a cultural icon.

I think any of us would wish for a life at least as fulfilling, much less a legacy as enduring as hers and her fellow travelers from that enterprise will undoubtedly be.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Well, she was one outstanding actress (I refuse to call women "actor" dammit!). I always enjoyed being entertained by her, as well as the rest of the bridge crew!

As a young sprout, she was nice eye candy added to the geek show I loved to watch.

Watching the original episodes now seem so crude and stolid. Glad we got to see her and crew in movies with a bit more modern film techniques.

89 is pretty good, she accomplished a lot and I'm guessing she lived it well.

According to her obituary in the New York Times, Martin Luther King convinced her to return to Star Trek for the second and third seasons because she was a role model.  She also worked with NASA to recruit minorities and women. I think she had a great life, and I'm sad she is gone.
