The ejector seats that fire through the floor

Featured Replies

When I was stationed at Hill AFB in Utah they had a B-52 arrive for testing cluster bombs at the Lakeside range.

Those of us involved with the test were allowed inside the aircraft to take a look.

The navigator and radar operator were stationed on the lower deck behind the cockpit and had downward ejecting seats.

The F-104 and the B-52 are the only aircraft I knew had downward ejecting seats.  There might have been others I'm not aware of.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I found a really interesting article about these seats here:   https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220802-why-some-aircraft-had-downward-firing-ejector-seats  .

The F-111 overcame the issue of high speed ejection and hitting the big sticky-up thing at the back in an even more awesome way... the ENTIRE COCKPIT ejected. 😲

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Apparently, the B-1A Lancer had an escape capsule for the crew of four but was replaced by ejection seats in the B-1B. The reason given by one source was "due to concerns about servicing the pyrotechnical components of the system," while another said it was done "to save cost and weight."

A segue into... F35A grounded due to dodgy ejection seat bang maker... 😲

Thank you for highlighting this. When the link was first posted a bit over a week ago I read the article about the downward firing seats, but I didn't read on about all the other topics.  I now realise how much I had missed.   I was particularly interested in the U2 history. I had no idea that so much development had been done on that aircraft. I was occasionally able to see the early U2s operating from RAF Alconbury in the 1960s. Nice to see that satellites have not taken over completely.

I’m not sure why this same link and story keeps getting posted, but since we already had a topic on it, to which the same link was posted twice, I merged your new topic to the existing one since there was already a conversation about it.

My bad. I didn't see the earlier one.
