Map Enhancement Tool Update Released

Featured Replies

I will give the new version a try later, but in my experience, Google is better than Bing in some places but not in others, so you will need to try it in areas you like to fly. Also colourisation can be more variable.

I did find in a number of areas that the Google textures were sharper,  noticeable by road markings, etc.

I have enjoyed using older versions of this tool and find it interesting and absorbing comparing the two in some places.

Keep your rolling cache switched off of course unless you intend using Google all of the time.

I'm just going to stick to the default maps data, and maybe look at GeForce Experience filtering to get more realistic colours (try and remove some of that nasty green tint that default Bing applies to everything).

In terms of realistic colours, I've had great results with ReShade.

I'm still on an old version that has the high LOD option but I haven't tried it... can you comment on if this option reduces the "tiling" effect that is sometimes seen?

Maybe get the files from a friend who still has them

Is there not a cache linked to the map-enhancement app? So no need for Rolling Cache at all?

Just flew over Iceland, and I think the terrain looks better with Google Maps vs newer Bing Maps here. 6.0.3 seems to be working, albeit I get a lot of "tiling". If that refers to the visible loading of tiles in the distance, that is. I don't really get this with MSFS, but with the replacement mod it's very apparent. I get it using both Google servers as well as newer Bing Maps. It's my biggest frustration with this mod.

When all tiles have finished loading though, it can look pretty good. I guess it really depends on the availability of decent (default) Bing Maps data. As part of my round the world trip, I'm flying over large stretches of remote areas. In a lot of places, I keep being struck by how good default Bing data is. I've had great scenery flying over Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.

These screenshots are from Iceland using Google Maps. With default Bing there were a lot of "missing tiles" not covered by satellite data.

With your Reshade settings, do you find the colours with both Bing and Google to be ok?  Google tiles in general are darker than Bing.

I think it's too early to tell. My last flights have been with low clouds so hard to get a good look at the terrain. I'll keep your question in mind though.

I am so glad you posted about Reshade!  I installed FinalLight 1.3 and turned on Lightroom.fx - deepened the blacks and shadows, increased saturation and vibrance.  what always annoyed me was the blue tint in shadows but FinalLight cleared most of that up plus I lowered saturation in the shadows a bit.

The results are SO good! I am using Bing Latest Maps with high Lod.

You are an endless supply of tweaks! 😛

I actually loathe the GF Exp app so will try the reshade above… probably without the added contrast. I also have an LG OLED, can you point me to more about what those settings are doing to bring down the highlights? I thought I had my TV setup optimally… 😞

That screenshot could be mistaken for a real photo 🙂 Colors look natural including the sky and the ground textures.

EDIT: That location though. It looks very familiar. Is it from the west coast of Norway? Not many parts of the world that looks like that.

Well, I think the most important points are included in the guide. Make sure that tone mapping and HGIG is set to off. Then enter the "secret menu" to decrease nits like described.

Another thing is to make sure you have the HDMI in the TV settings set to PC. And in nvidia control panel choose PC and the native resolution of the monitor. I also have it set to custom RGB with a color depth of 10 bpc.

I think the biggest change for me was 1. FinalLight's LUT settings, which results in much more natural color balance overall - and 2. HDR tuning with tone mapping set to off and total nits reduced from 4000 to prevent specular highlights from being blown out. This really brings out detail in the sky, making the clouds "pop".

Try with and without the lightroom.fx settings to see what you prefer. I think some people might find that there is less detail in dark areas.

Ooh I must give this a try. I've been using FinalLight for some time but I must have skipped over the Lightroom.fx part. Will try.
