Like I said I grew up watching McEnroe so nothing she has done holds a candle.  Having maybe 4 fineable outbursts in a few decades of pro sports doesn't make someone a disgusting person...  Do you know what Osaka said about her after that BTW?  It sure wasn't that she was a disgusting person.  She is a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and supports multiple charities including her own which does work like the following...

McEnroe was so bad I stopped watching tennis for almost 10 years so I missed most of Pete Sampras and all of Jim Courier, for example.

I'll never forget a night in Tampa when Sampras came into a little Italian place my friends worked at.  They basically shut the place down for him and his entourage and made the entire meal complimentary.  He stiffed the entire staff AND us out at the Valet stand when he left.  Now THAT'S a disgusting person.  

Tennis doesn't punish on court outbursts McEnroe is the voice and face of the tour now LOL... 

Now Becker I loved...  Still remember him doing the soccer juggle with the ball in his match and the dives 🙂  Federer and Nadal have been an absolute treat in recent years as well but I do agree the women's side fell off far more than the mens.

Although this Aussie guy apparently spit at his own coach and supporters today and started screaming at them mid match.  Taking it out on the fans makes you a real word not allowed.

John M is a completely different person now to his playing days. Man he was a poor example but that was a consistent thing with him back then.  Like once a match lol. 

To your point I try to separate someone in the heat of a sporting event verse what they do outside of competition... Lots of athletes are totally different when they aren't in the moment.  Especially drivers so I get it when Red Mist sets in as much as you try to control it 

It's not looking great for her right now ...  Decent match so far though.

I'm following the fellow Canadian, Bianca Andreescu. It's not looking great for her, either.

The Tomljanovic-Williams match is incredible...  Last game had like 9 set points and went on for 20 minutes... Some great rallies.  

Serena looks exhausted don't think she should have played the doubles with Venus as well.  Just gave up 5 games from up 4-0.

Fifth match point saved. This is tremendous tennis.

Serena lost and is out. But she fought of 5 match points and lost 4 break points. It was the best tennis match I remember, judging from the crowd reactions this whole match.

In other sports they are quite crafty and time there cycles so they don't get caught. I understand that Williams is the most tested player though.

Some incredible tennis last night was great to watch!  

@martin-w she is indeed tested more than any other female athlete, probably twice as often and has never been brought up on any accusations of PED's.

These are a couple of the examples exactly as to why I don't think she's deserving of her "carrying the torch" status for women's tennis.  She is a great player, no doubt.  But not a great person again.  These two examples along with other times I remember her being not a very good sport about losing.  I can remember a time where she was interviewed after losing to Simona Halep, I believe, and she gave no credit to the fact that Simona beat her.  It was all excuses but no credit to how her opponent played.  That's just one small other example I can think of.  Her sister seems to me more deserving than her.

As to McEnroe, I never thought he was deserving of "carrying the torch" for men's tennis either, if he was.  He was sorta before my time as I didn't start watching tennis until the early '90's.
