September 7, 20223 yr Hello, So, for awhile I had REX skyforce installed but deal with massive stutters and FPS issues with it installed, mainly clouds, so i have uninstalled it. I use Env Tex / Env Shade but yet still get massive FPS hits in storm areas, my clouds are set at the lowest setting in Env Tex (DXT5 512). I have a pretty powerful PC, I9-10850K 4.8 GHZ, RTX 3060, 32 GB DDR4 Ram, P3dv4 is running off an SSD. Is it possible that Rex textures are still lingering eventhough its uninstalled?? I feel like sometimes this is possible because of the massive FPS hit I get in storm areas with clouds. My cloud draw distance is set to 60 MI and coverage is set to max. Any ideas why I am getting a massive FPS hit when there are lots of clouds?
September 7, 20223 yr You should update to P3D v5.3. P3D v5 will utilize your graphics card much better - including clouds/weather - and is overall a lot better than v4. With v5 you should easily run REX with high resolution clouds and max coverage on your computer.
September 7, 20223 yr More info on your monitor? And what level of AA are you setting in the "Display" section of P3D?

September 7, 20223 yr With a 3060, I wouldn't want more than 3 cloud layers. Cloud shadows is another thing to take a hard look at when you see frame rate getting hit around clouds. September 7, 20223 yr Hello Dan, I have the same processor, the 10850K overclocked to 5.0 Ghz on all cores. I have 32 Gb running on three separate SSD's. I have three times your screen size, 3 32inch 2k monitors in surround. I have upgraded to a 3090 Ti, but before I ran everything with a 1080 Ti. I have my screens configured whithin Nvidea to 30Hz. an even in the worst of weather the frames hardly drop from 30 FPS. I am also using the latest version of P3D V5. I use Active Sky and I switch between EA on and Off. I like the clouds better with EA Off but the terrain looks better with EA on. Try upgrading to the V5 version of P3d Regards Juan
September 8, 20223 yr Author Thinking about getting a 3070ti or 3080 in a few months, would that help? Ive heard p3d is mainly cpu intensive though.
September 8, 20223 yr I would wait for the release of the 4000 series which is just around the corner. It has been rumoured that a 4070 will be the equivalent of a 3090, but that will be confirmed once available and benchmarked.

I have a RTX3060 and it can handle anything P3Dv5.3,Active Sky,ASCA,numerours addon aircraft and scenery can throw at it with ease,so from my experiance with the 3060 i wouldnt say thats the culprit.

Actually P3D is very much both a heavy user of CPU and GPU. I have a 3080Ti and it's easy to max it out which then results in frame rate loss. In this pic I've maxed the cast shadows (all items ticked) noting the 99% or "maxed" out GPU which resulted in frame rate loss down to 21 fps. Disabling vegetation cast shadows dropped the GPU down to ~76% allowing the frame rate to increase enough to meet the 30 hz vsync I'm using. That is the FPS doesn't go above 30 fps as the monitor hz rate is also 30. At times Cloud Shadows (cast) is the cause and at other times both Veg and Cloud shadows need to be off (Cast), really depends on the weather situation and the time of date as low sun also can equal long complex shadows. Maybe the next gen 4080Ti series will have enough capacity to max settings without also maxing the GPU. Your issue is using 4.5 which was always an FPS hog. Upgrade to 5.3 for $60 and you will have miles better performance than 4.5. I am using P3D v5.3 with "very high" settings on just a 1080ti and it runs very well on that. If you don't trust me, try the $10 developer license for a month and see if yourself. 🙂
