MSFS does in game advertising with the world map, but that's different than flashing up a buy now ad on final approach for your destination airport.  XP11 having the advertisement on the main menu would make sense to me and I don't think anyone should fault them for that.  Flashing up an add in game is a bit meh.  I doubt it has anything to do with desperation.  I am sure it's a technique recommended by someone to help.  Desperation would be shutting down XP11 with a server check a forcing an upgrade to XP12.  I don't see them doing that ever.

I don't mind the World Map in MSFS showing paid add-ons that apply to that location.  It's not intrusive to me at all, and I believe it can be turned off. It's even helpful, IMO, because if there is a region you fly in, you can see what other paid add-ons are available for that region.  Showing it on the menu, I can tolerate, as I am not in game yet. Showing it on the load screen is the best, since when the game loads, that's technically not "play time" yet. But showing it in-game is the worst, especially some XP 11 users say you have to manually close that window, and the same pop-up shows up again when you reload the game into a new flight (or does it show when you load into every flight?).

It's a desperate move by Austin to me because almost all XP 11 users know about XP 12.  Repeating that message to XP 11 users doesn't help the cause, it's just spamming them and it's seen by some XP 11 users as very intrusive.  This XP 11 user outright calls it spam:

I just emailed support complaining about it. It's Spam and I expected better from Laminar

Now that people have seen the default scenery in XP12, I suspect that LR has already sold the vast majority of copies they're ever going to sell of XP12. The big seller now in XP world will be add-on scenery to cover up the default disappointment.

What were people expecting ?

It's X-Plane, if anyone came in expecting it to look like MSFS out of the box then they had no idea what they were buying. If you want to put in the effort it can look great but that's not what core XP is about.

I wonder whether XP11 ATC will start spamming for XP12. 🙂

I decided to read some posts on the other forum ( won't mention any names) and I saw people claiming that the scenery looked as good on XP12 as it does on MSFS.. Yeah, right.......😁

Have your seen what can be achieved with free Ortho4XP generated scenery and the free X-Scenery Europe overlay ?

Yes, still doesn’t look as good.

I agree but it looks pretty decent

It does, and it’s 100% better than what you get for free, but it’s missing something. There is a new forest addon out that could maybe make a difference. The road traffic and night lightening in XP12 is way better than msfs, then again it was in xp11 too.

(Well strictly speaking it's still for free as the Ortho you can create yourself and X-Scenery is freeware.)

XP12 is still an X-Plane with all the good and bad things that means but it's seems a good improvement in XP11.

Here are the "improved" roads in XP12.

I've no idea if the stock roads are in XP12 are improved or not (since I'm using the aforementioned X-Scenery), but I can see that plenty of other things have been.

How about if you fly in Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, New Guinea, Africa, etc. etc.  Are there overlays for those places?

No. I captured that scene in the XP12 demo. I'll attach another below. There are of course bad-looking areas of scenery in MSFS. But here's the difference: Bad-looking scenery is the rule, rather than the exception, in XP12. Bad-looking scenery is the exception, rather than the rule, in MSFS.

Not yet. I *think* America is coming next but don't quote me on that.

For NZ and a chunk of E Coast of Canada I'm using pure Ortho without overlay.

But most of my flying is in Europe as that's where most of my planes are in FSE.
