the only match for the AMD Ryzen 7950x3D should be Intels upcoming Meteor Lake, based on their new 7nm process, whereas their current power hungry 13900K is still based on the outdated 10nm process, that's why Intel calls it now their "Intel 7", though it is no match for real 7nm and only a placeholder until early 2023.

I think I might switch to AMD 7950X. The cache looks better than the 13900K and I’ve heard that this is what helps msfs?

Cache is important, and probably why the 5800X3D has gotten so much praise. If I knew this when I was upgrading my rig this summer I might have gone for it instead of the 12900.

Ok, I have just switched to AMD for the first time in two decades! 7950X on the way, and I will change that out to a new 3D one early next year. The cache seems a big thing, and the 13900K seems a bit old tech in comparison. Hope I made the right decision!

I have my doubts that a custom Watercooling Loop is able to get rid of the massive heat this will cause on that many cores.

M.

Only 8 of 16 are "performance" cores.  Really depends on how much voltage it takes to do 5.8-6ghz.  Soldered interface will help of course.  Right now I'm running a 9900K at 4.9Ghz on all cores and in mid flight core temps are now bouncing between 47C and 52C and that is on air..but I have a very good chip that only needs 1.19v to do this, and my ambient air supply comes from my basement where it's always 60F or below.

The cache configuration of the 7950X is exactly the same as the 5950X, 32MB for each CCD, so the 13900K should be better in that regard.

If you decide to go the AM5 route after all, if MSFS performance is all you care about, no need to go for the 7950X, the 7600X will do.

Quite frankly until something visually changes I don't see anything worthwhile coming out of 4 series for this title.  What matters to me is smooth, stutter-free flight, at a minimum of 30FPS sustained everywhere in everything, with crystal clear and sharp visuals.  I can't discern the difference between T-LOD of 150 and 200 it just hardly matters.  Right now I'm very close to maxed out everything and can fly in and out of the most complex settings the sim offers in the most complex plane available.  Main thread impact can threaten 30FPS/vsync, but it's relatively rare now.  If n when cloud depictions gets a major update I just don't see it.  A much more potent CPU than my 9900K will make a big difference in being able to sustain 30FPS, but it really won't take a 13900K at 5.8gHz to get me to where it matters.  When we upgrade the display we'll aim for Gsync and 40FPS, and that is all that this sim will ever need.  I have to marvel at wanting 140FPS via DLSS 3 over razor sharp cockpit visuals which I already have.  At my screen viewing distance 4K really offers almost nothing.

That's unfortunate. If you were in the market for upgrading i think you would have been better served by actually waiting to see what everyone has to offer and methodically going through the reviews and adapt them to your specific need.. You would have only waited  till early November.

Oct 20 Raptor Lake

Nov 3 RDNA 3

At that point everyone's cards are on the table. (Unless the 7950 you just purchased is just a stopgap for the x3d versions yet to be released) Then i take it your making a reasonable bet.

Exactly what I am doing. Betting on the 3D version that I can just switch in to it fingers crossed.

You are putting a 4090 with an i9900?

I just ordered also. AMD upgrade from 10900K to AMD7900X on an ASUS Crosshair HERO X670E with 32GB RAM DDR5 at 6000MhZ and 36 Latency.

I will test this with VR Varjo Aero. ATM I am getting mostly between 38 and 42 FPS in air, Big airports between 30 and 33 FPS, small airports 33 to 36 FPS. I need to reach 45FPS in cruise and the smaller airports. If the 7900X does not reach this, I will upgrade again on the same board with an X3D Version then.

Nice I went for a 7950X on a GIGABYTE X670 GAMING X AX and 32GB Corsair DOMINATOR PLATINUM RGB DDR5 6000MHz

I went for a 3950x as my sim PC before MSFS came out. Gambled on it (MSFS) being a bit more modern than it turned out to be, I expected it to make more use of the huge number of threads. Bit disappointed to find myself CPU limited all through my time with the 3950 - CP0 flat out at 4.2 ish and 31 other cores twiddling their silicon thumbs. Have just ordered a 7900x though. Didn't feel I'd bother with the 32 threads this time (I'll just give MSFS 23 to ignore instead), and the 7900 seemed to get ever so slightly better scores on some of the benchmarks I saw.

I stuck with the AMD environment because I figured I'd have to have a whole new setup either way (AMD or Intel) and the AMD design pretty much guarantees compatability for another two or three gens of processor, whereas the 13th Gen Intel is, I think, the last of its line.

I've also heard from someone I consider a very reliable and trusted source that the new AMD GPUs are going to be something special, particularly as regards the DX12 implementation, so I may well replace my 3090ti with one of those once the dust settles. And of course, there's always the prospect of a X3D chip next year as well.

Not seeing my machine for a few weeks yet (the memory I want is not in stock for a bit), but hoping that this time I might manage to get ahead of the game. MSFS was perfectly fine on the 3950 when it first came out, but all the "improvements" have slowed it down considerably for me. I dare say they'll do that again, but we'll see.

But although I've ordered a 1600w ps for the new rig, I shan't (shalln't ?) bother with the 4090.
