Hence one of the reasons of a purchase of a 4090 I would imagine... I'm talking about all the videos where people test in the default 172 at 3000 feet over a city, doubling FPS with DLSS3 and the 4090, in which case 70 had to be the base FPS if it ends up at 140 FPS. That's not worth 2000$ for me since it barely makes a difference in what I see. What would be worth it to me is landing at 60 FPS in the Fenix A320 into a cloudy JFK with tons of AI which is what I'm trying to figure out if it can do that. But, again, I haven't seen that anywhere except in a test that ended up not so well. The glowing reports seem to come from testing scenarios where performance is excellent anyway, whereas reports of trouble seem to come from testing in scenarios that run at substantially lower FPS. This is obviously where you want the benefit of a card and technology like that, but to me it's still not clear if it actually delivers that benefit. If I go from A to B there is absolutely no need to get a new car every 4 years since the one before that does that just fine. If my current card delivers smooth performance at 70 FPS I don't know why I would pay (an ungodly amount of) money to get 140 FPS that I'm not really gonna see unless I'm looking at the FPS counter. I'm getting a new car when the one I have fails to bring me from A to B, just like I get a new card when my current one fails to deliver good performance. If the 4090 plus DLSS3 can fix a 25 FPS scenario I'm all in, but this is where reports seem conflicting.

If it does actually turn a 25 FPS stufferfest into a 50 FPS scenario with no artifacts and graphical glitches I'm all for it. Which is exactly why I can't decide if I want to bite or not. With all the addons installed and other stuff at large airports with lots of traffic, I can still bring my 3080 12GB to an occasional stuttering fest, and I'm sure it's happened to you at some point with the 3090. It would be nice to be fully loaded down with traffic and addons and have 40+ FPS, that's really the only thing I care about other than developing. The other fact is, I can develop stuff faster with a faster GPU, MSFS is VERY VERY stuttery in Dev mode when you have an airport loaded. It works normally before you load an airport, but start dealing with custom materials and there are constant stutter-freezes. That said, I cannot pay for a 4090, too much, but I MIGHT be able to pay the difference for a 7900xt. AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram

For others, it's just because they have plenty of extra money, so they mise well have the latest just in case it might help at some point. It doesn't really make sense to own a high-end sports car unless you go to a track or something, but I'm sure there are thousands of people that do that have never pushed it past 90mph. They have a car that can go 160+, but never go over 90. Some people just like the way stuff looks or like to always own the fastest possible. A lot of it is insanity, but it's a normal behavior in society and people do it with all kinds of things. AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram

For the record, I don't think that @Ianrivaldosmith or anyone else in this thread who own a 4090 bought it to be a show off. But what I've seen so far seems like putting band aid over a wound that doesn't exist. I don't want to fix a 70 FPS scenario. I want to fix that dreaded 25-ish FPS scenario and preferably so without graphical glitches.

If you were 15 and had a 4090, etc... Well, for them it's just the fact that it can help in some situations, but for me the issue with the 4090 is not a big enough jump in raw power to justify the expense. Hence, if the 7900xt comes out below $1000, might be worth it over my 3080, not sure. Edited October 25, 20223 yr by Alpine Scenery AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram

It was an easy decision to dump my old card, but selling a 3080 is going to be a little gutsier, too many scam buyers on high-end electronics. It's a real pain dealing with eBay if you get taken, but sometimes there are signs before the sale closes. I once had a guy change his address 3 times and kept changing the C/O, and when I looked up the address, it was to a hotel. Who has a PC shipped to a hotel, I can answer that one pretty simply, someone with a fake ID that goes around to hotels to pickup goods bought with stolen credit cards. I cancelled it and he said "I'll report you to Ebay", and I just said "I'll report you to the Miami police and the hotel". Never heard from him again. For me it's been about getting out of the 25-30 hardware limitation stutterfest at heavy scenery, with complex aircraft and AI traffic. IMO it's possible to achieve this goal with the 4090 without introducing more stutters or game-breaking image distortions. 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

Auch, not my proudest moment 🙂 I've been able to optimize the settings further since then - but I mainly fly GA nowadays. The Fenix is such a CPU-hog. Based on my GA test flights in the KLAX area I think I would still be marginal getting a trouble-free approach there in the Fenix with the full AI traffic package. I can get 54fps stutter-free at max settings overflying iniBuild's KLAX at low altitude in the Vertigo. That's 27fps without frame generation. How much fps does the Fenix eat vs a light GA - 10 perhaps? That's down to 17 fps. That'll be 34 with frame generation i.e. still marginal.
