XP12 - Amazing Performance!

This will be awesome for me as a mix VR and 2D flyer.

More people begging LR to give us a VR/2D preference switcher might help us get it. I know its not a democracy but everyone responds to the villagers getting the pitchforks out.

corrupt shadercache and preferences files can cause problems regardless of GPU, first go to when having problems is delete those (backup preferences), this has fixed issues for several people, myself included.

Where does one find these to delete them?

Is there a way to avoid losing all of my joystick mapping etc?

Thanks!

shadercache you can just delete and it will just take a bit longer to start next time.

preferences I check by renaming the folder, if it wasnt that delete the new one and rename the old one back.

if it was... generally easier to rebind keys and views than work out which is responsible.

both live inside the output folder.

I know its totally blasphemic to ask but could it even be possible that somethings changed between xp12 beta and rc/final that was not AMD driver related (as this was stable over time)? The performance in beta was indeed amazing. But it isn't anymore.

It probably has. I too noticed a drop in performance. B14 was the smoothest. But I think they're still tuning the performance.

Laminar are still trying to get more fixes in AMD drivers, by staying in contact with AMD, to this day.

Sadly AMD seems to be ignoring these issues, so much that Laminar has to come up with zink to fix AMD's ignorance.

Thanks for the help everyone - my XP12 is running relatively smoothly and enjoyably now....will look forward to further enhancements on FPS/CPU usage by Laminar.

One question - why do my frames per second go much higher when I reduce resolution, even though my GPU isn't working as hard?

It's clearly CPU time that I need to reduce to achieve greater smoothness.

If your frame rate increases significantly when reducing output resolution, it means that the GPU is actually your bottleneck. Are you using 4K?

In case, try decreasing the antialias setting (try FXAA).

If only it was that simple.

e g this could be a plane plugin drawing to the screens during the main thread, the time it takes to do that will appear as increased cpu time. higher res takes longer....

The wider topic of HPC is as tall as it is broad, its very easy to break things in unexpected ways trying to do it, when the aircraft systems start getting complex hits can hide anywhere, e.g.

XPD-13316 – Excessive XPLMGetFMSEntryInfo performance cost.

is one I tracked down, it looked like this

We are just a few weeks in to anyone - even LR - being able to complete a wide variety of flights in XP12 (days in the case of the 744). Pretty much all the remaining issues depend on what plane, in what situation with what settings. There is a very long tail of issues to fix before everything is a perfect as the C172  in clear conditions on a top of the range [nvidia] machine.

At least for my AMD rig I noticed that the FPS drops when I "look" at rendered objects such as buildings or trees, which makes sense since these use a lot of CPU. For example, I can get 60-70 FPS looking inside the cockpit but under 30FPS looking forward.

are on you on ortho? I find it much much gentler on fps than default mesh, I assume its because 2d autogen is actually a lot more complex to generate with a lot of data flying round vs a simple lod mesh with square tiles overlayed.

Isn't that a really weak headset, though?

compared to whats available now yep, had it for like 4 years now and got like 7000 hours in steamvr iirc, plus a few hundred on the ps4.

just no clear upgrade path, reverb g2 not as solidly built, index probably my best current choice if it goes bad, but that's been out for just as long and both realty hard to get hold of. do check every now and again for a good deal on one but not seen one. Kinda waiting for a solid headset with eye tracking at a sensible price and linux support or for it to die atm.

pico 4 seems to be making waves, but would need to upgrade my router to WiFi6 and Id prefer wired.

Ortho, global forests and most plugins are switched off when testing things. It made no difference. However, some airports have normal FPS hits while others have really big FPS hits. Maybe the latter use the old openGL drawn objects?

Would explain why you have good performance and the other guy doesn't.

they are just a mobile phone screen in a plastic box with a couple of gyros and maybe a couple of cameras.

The only "magic" is in translating the gyro output into stable movement and the fancy stuff they do with the lenses.

as we cannot see anything with our eyes operating above 22 FPS anyway

is that so?

83 fps, that's what I'd call "amazing performance" in 2022/2023.

there are things that are amazing in x-plane 12, performance is not one of them.
