Winter textures info

Featured Replies

I am flying MSFS more and more..... even thought I've owned it since day 1, I still have not been able to let go of P3D.

I now have all the REX products for MSFS and am doing some winter flying. What I found is that, unless the weather is actually snowing, the ground textures are still summer green. December 29th and clear skies? Green grass is what I get.  Accuseason has taken care of the trees..... but what about the ground textures?

Am I missing something here?

With real weather activated, MSFS uses a dataset of real world snow coverage to put snow on the terrain.  It’s not perfect - the dataset has a relatively corse resolution and roads/runways are often covered - but it generally works.

You're not, no.

All well and good. MSFS Native Live WX has it now and it’s free.

I've noticed it sometimes can take quite a while to load in.  I was flying this afternoon near Champaign IL.  There was partial snow coverage but then after about 5 minutes it all disappeared.  I presume it updated to a new snow map and non was present.

You can also look at this map - I believe it's the actual source from which MSFS draws snow in the sim

(If that link doesn't work scroll to the bottom of this link for Snow Depth)

You should be getting snow coverage where there is real-world snow on the ground as seen in Ryan's link above.  REX will not be able to fix that....they were/are supposed to add some terrain 'masks' which will dull the bright green textures for winter but the sim will place snow.  It has looked pretty accurate to me the past week.. Where were you flying?  Unlike P3D, it will only show snow where there is actually snow.  I don't miss the P3D white snow textures everywhere....

Landed and took off from KDEN last evening and this morning, snow on the ground. I use Bijan's 4 Seasons.

Picked up Flightbeam KDEN last night and flew out with snow coverage on the ground. Default weather. Snow on the ground dissipated about fifteen minutes east of the airport.

Doesn't fully answer the OP's query, however.

Only if you already own Bijan's 4 Seasons add-on, can we turn MSFS' default Summer Green ground textures to something a little more realistic.
Using the experimental features, namely adding one of the folders, e.g. 'Bijan Terrain Masks NH - Experimental 60' to your MSFS Community folder does this.

REX said their ground textures were “coming soon” back in September…
