Windows 10 vs 11 (for better MSFS performance)

Recommended Posts

Some interesting observations on whether or not one should upgrade to Windows 11 for better performance of MSFS.

One should migrate to Win11 for other reasons, not because of a 1% performance increase in MSFS. I went from Win10 to Win11 and didn't see any difference.

Thanks Bob I have stuck with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" model for this one.  I didn't make it to the end and was struck by the better CPU, the 4090, and the fact with that workstation he's using DLSS and the initial frame rate comparison was a nothing burger.  Does it get any better?  I truly have perfect performance now, everywhere, so no way I would change to Win 11 and jeopardize that.

I don't have 8 minutes 29 seconds. What was his (and I'm guessing, your) conclusion?

Looks like there was mostly no benefit switching to W 11, other than getting a UI that doesn't work as well. ( UI is my opinion)

Many thanks, already done. To me it feels more like 2% though 😉

Some of the comparisons, showed higher FPS with W 10.

If Windows 95 gave you an extra 4 FPS would you go back to that?

I switched to Windows 11 after upgrading from a 8700K to a 13600K and I did not see any noticable difference in performance (except the one I got from the novel CPU of course). MSFS performance was identical using the 13600K on W10 and W11. There are reports however that W11 scheduler is more capable of handling those E- and P-core galore of 12th and 13th gen Intel CPUs, that is why I finally took the plunge and upgraded to W11, as I do not use my rig solely for MSFS.

Windows 10 ends support in October 2025.  That's the important date and everything should work back from that.  2025 seems like a long way off, but these things come quick, especially if people aren't prepared.  That date is a "drop dead" date for 10.  You do not want to be running 10 when it falls off support.

So, the answer is simple to the question "when should I be on 11?"  Before that date.

If you have an older PC that you plan on replacing before that date, you can stay on 10 for now.  Any newer hardware should be going to 11 at this point.

My opinion as someone who maintains a lot of business PCs is that 11 is really "10.5" and is not really a massive change.  MS has avoided the dreaded "every other version being bad" this time around, which is a refreshing change.

You need to be off by Oct 2025.  How you get there is up to you.

Absolutely no fan of Windows (Linux / BSD (and it's derivatives such as Mac OS) being my favourites).

That said; I am kind of surprised how well Windows has been working for me over the last years. I was reluctant to 'upgrade' to 22H2 or whatever the name was but it's been smooth sailing for me.

It's a no-brainer to go W11 as opposed to W10 TBH (UI differences aside).

The newer options in File Explorer made the switch to 11 worth it to me. Having the Cut, Copy, Paste so easily accessable makes things so mych better.

Kind of irrelevant to the topic but that will of course happen at some time.
