MSFS does not shut down

I've had this problem for quite some time and the latest patch hasn't fixed it, 8 times out of 10 the game won't shut down when I go back to desktop, I have to force it to shut down through Taskmanager, has anyone else this problem?

I only have this issue, when I flew a specific minimum amount of time in the fenix A320. Lately I am flying PMDG777, and the issue did not return.

My guess at my end is, it´s the fenix Bootstrapper.

Are you flying Fenix?

  • It may be another program in the background related to MSFS that doesn't close when the sim is suppose to close.

  • No, for me I have to force a shut down. Interestingly when I restart MSFS it never tells me that it was shutdown unexpectedly so it's an odd one.

Don’t think it would be the problem but if you run the TDS GTNxi, it has a known bug that causes it to crash when shutting down the sim. It holds onto the sim. You can see if it is a possible culprit by checking your Windows Reliability Monitor. Almost every time I exit the sim, there is a “silent” background app crash of the TDS GTN reported in the Reliability Monitor. For me it does not crash the sim or prevent MSFS shutting down tho.

Been like this for a while. I reported it and the dev’s claim to be investigating it as a known issue, plan to fix (hopefully) in the future.

Yes I have the problem but I use Alt + F4 and it goes out right away.

Oops, Sorry, it did not go away, only the window closed. Back to the lab

It's 100% reproducible for me, I always use the task manager to kill it off, really annoying 😞

There is one guy on the MSFS forums “TenPatrol” who is very computer-knowledgeable who has pretty conclusively shown that the problem is the MS “gaming services” app which MSFS depends on to run. The latest  version causes the problem, while a slightly older version does not. Unfortunately, it is quite a complex configuration process to insure that Windows preserves the older version and does not try to automatically download the newer (buggy) version.
