March 15, 20233 yr In a word they're terrible. In the month and half since Betty passed away and I haven't felt like cooking I've tried most of them and most of them have been thrown away half eaten. Last night was a Marie Callendar's Chicken Terriyaki Bowl. I threw half of it away. I never baked a frozen pizza that I liked. I can eat Hungry Man frozen dinners. They're not bad. Especially the ones with chicken. Or the Marie Callendar's frozen chicken pot pies. They're pretty good. But nothing else frozen I've tried has been worth it. I still have some frozen steaks and hamburger patties in the freezer. I'm going back to cooking. Cooking isn't much fun unless you have someone to cook for. But when you're cooking just for yourself it isn't the same. But it's better than those frozen dinners with the pretty pictures on the box. Tonight it's going to be a rare New York strip steak (it's on the counter thawing out right now). I'll season it well with fresh ground pepper, a bit of salt, and curry. A baked potato and a small can of creamed corn. And some peach ice-cream for dessert. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
March 15, 20233 yr Noel, this is the first I heard of your Wifes passing. May I offer sincere condolences. Edited March 15, 20233 yr by Patco Lch Vic green

March 15, 20233 yr I hear ya Noel. I have been alone for 20 years and I am getting tired of eating my cooking the same dishes all the time Once in awhile I will have a Hungry Man meal. In fact I had one tonight. Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes and green beans. I do have half a DiGiorno's pizza every Friday. Not bad. Other than that, it's something make with hamburger chicken, pork chops etc. If I make it, I will have lived 80 years this May. Hang in there Noel. March 15, 20233 yr Administrators @Vineguy I gave up on DiGiorno's a long time ago! Look for a Screamin' Sicilian frozen pizza. Way better! March 16, 20233 yr Moderator I fully understand you Noel. I've been alone since 1999 when the last of my family passed away. In fact I lost my mom, step-mom, dad, and finally my brother all in the span of a little over one year. Fortunately, I enjoy cooking and only have a few frozen meals in my freezer in case I have a late club meeting. I've learned over the past few years to not eat before going to a meeting, since eating triggers a rush to the men's room! I'm having leftover pot roast and veggies for dinner tonight. Tomorrow night is shrimp scampi. Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

When my first wife died I lived at home because I had a 1 year old daughter. I have always been married or lived in Air Force barracks or dormitories or quarters. This is my first experience at living alone and I don't quite know how to handle it. It's going to take me a while to get the hang of it. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. I hope to get to enjoying cooking after a while. I loved cooking for somebody who appreciates it. My wife and I shared kitchen duties. And when we cooked we cleaned up after ourselves. Have you ever heard of Mulligatawny soup? When we had pot luck for the volunteers at the refuge I always made it and it always ran out. It was a British soup prepared for colonists in India by Indian cooks with their spin on it. Pretty spicy. Lots of curry and chicken. I'll PM you the recipe if want or I can post it here if others would like it. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
March 16, 20233 yr We might not be able to help with the dishes, Noel, but I think everyone here would agree we're happy to talk with you after each meal if it's company you want or need. My sincerest condolences on the passing of your wife. Mark Adeane - NZWN

I cook for myself periodically and Indian is one of my favorites, or perhaps British Indian. I actually still remember two great curries I had in London many many years ago, one for lunch in a traditional English pub, and one in a very small, somewhat dingy takeaway somewhere in the north of London, and it was some of the best food I've ever eaten. When I make curry I just boil a pot of basmati rice on one stove and heat up a mix of powders in oil on another, then add some veggies, or meat and veggies, and a bit after add some water. Nothing great, but maybe on par with a lower rated takeaway. Anyway, pretty fast and easy. As far as frozen food goes, I don't like it so much either, except pizza and ice cream. I do like fast, easy, convenient, plus not having a lot of dishes to clean afterwards. But just a pot of pasta with sauce from a jar, and maybe some cheese is perfectly fine for me too.

I use a "mild" curry since my mouth won't tolerate any "hot" spice at all. 😬 I'd enjoy getting the recipe because I can always modify it to accommodate my taste buds. Fr. I like the unique flavour of the fenugreek and I use cubed tofu instead of paneer in order to keep my fat intake low. I'm not sure how spicy it's supposed to be but I make it fairly mild.
