May 14, 20233 yr My 3080Ti sits between about 48% and 65% utilization. All settings except TLOD are Ultra, 8x/16x. I have liquid smooth, stutter-free animation no matter where I am in any plane on my 3440x1440 display. My frame rate is locked to around 33-35 depending on scenario and there is no need to go beyond that as I also enjoy ultra low frame time variance after a brief departure post SU12. Any tweaks inside config files etc to improve visuals in any way that might stress the GPU pretty much exclusively as my CPU I would not want to load more. May 14, 20233 yr Shadows, 6144 (optimum for me) or 8092 if you really want to push it. Shadows are nice and sharp after this. It will only use a little more GPU though, but it is a start. After that, why not try scaling at 110 or 120%. Personally, I prefer my GPU to run cool and quiet and save energy, but I use the shadows tweak to good effect. Save a lot of the flickering. 3080Ti here also. Edited May 14, 20233 yr by bobcat999 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). Thanks I prefer for all to run cool and do as well but have so much unused headroom. I'll try the shadows tweak thanks as long as the impact on CPU is virtually absent. Scaling I have used in the past but notice visually the difference is not worth the impact and have also noticed a little recurrent "shimmer" for lack of a better word when scaling over 100%. May 15, 20233 yr Author Have not been able to make the change stick, to the Shadows Size line. I'm not opening up options during flight, but when I look at the config file after ending a flight and exiting MSFS to the desktop, it's back to its default setting: {Shadows MaxSliceCount 4 Size 2048 Any ideas where to look? Hi Noel, you are on the right place, but don't change any in sim settings because then it will cahge back to default, if I am correct. Yep I remember this from editing the file in the past but for some reason it's not sticking this time. I even checked the file location was correct with the shortcut I had created on the desktop, and it is. May 16, 20233 yr For people like me who love flying, but hate computers, it would be amazing if simulators had 'adaptive performance'. Imagine if the simulator software was clever enough to detect your hardware, suggest a settings profile then adjust visuals dynamically based on system resources instead of becoming a slide show. 9800X3D | 5080 | 32GB | 2TB NVME | Dell Ultrasharp U3415W 34" | 3440 x 1440 60Hz
May 16, 20233 yr Man, you guys need to stop tweaking and start flying. Since getting my new rig and setting up the basics in the display options, I haven't touched anything. I swear, it seems some folks enjoy fiddling with the sim more than actually getting a plane in the (virtual) air.
May 16, 20233 yr Setting it to 4096 has worked nicely on my 3080Ti. I thought about trying higher but from other posts elsewhere, the shadow edges can become unrealistically sharp. Nevertheless, the interior of my JF Arrow III is very much enhanced on a sunny day. A good tweak. Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting. https://rationalwiki.org

I might try some of your settings when I get around to it, but I have to go back through posts and dig them up. I haven't tried locking at 35fps and am currently locked at 60fps. You are using more optimized settings, as I am generally at 70% to 90% GPU utilization with a 3080 12GB and an AMD 5800x. Your card and CPU are a little better though, so that might be a small part of it. Edited May 17, 20233 yr by Alpine Scenery AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram

If you moved yours to 33-35fps you'd notice your GPU is hovering around where mine is. IOW, unlocked mine will run where yours does. May 18, 20233 yr I haven't lowered my frame rate yet because my Asus 3080 12GB runs plenty cool even near full load, partly thanks to all the Noctua fans on my case (have 5 of them), and it's still 99% completely silent with the Noctua. That was one of several reasons I returned the AMD Powercolor RedDevil 6900xt, yes it was slightly faster but it was a LOT louder and ran a lot hotter. I'm sure the Asus 6900xt's are quieter, but they were way overpriced and cost almost as much as a 3090 at the time. Edited May 18, 20233 yr by Alpine Scenery AMD 5800x | Nvidia 3080 (12gb) | 64gb ram
