The plane crashed about 40 miles west of Half Moon Bay.  It was a Viking Air DHC-6-400 Twin Otter.  Now the route it was flying was from Santa Rosa, Ca. to Honolulu, Ha.  I was checking the specs on that aircraft and even with extended fuel tanks, the range is about 950 miles.  How many fuel stops and where would they be between San Francisco and Hawaii??  🤔

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

They can add fuel tanks or bladders in the cabin for ferry flights.

I would figure the aircraft would be very heavy trying to carry that much extra fuel in bladders and/or ferry tanks.  Wonder if they will determine what caused it to go down?

While the normal operating MTOW is 12,500 lbs, for ferry flights they are certified for up to 17,500 lbs. Being this is a -400 model, it is a relatively new plane.

Baby aircraft are ferried all the way from the UK to US. Up to Wick in Scotland. Iceland. Greenland. Then Canada and down to the US. And in reverse of course.

The distance from the west coast of North America to Hawaii is a bit longer than any of those legs hopping across the Atlantic though.

About 2393 miles worth! 🤔

Just found that myself. 2190 miles. 18 hour flight. The additional fuel tank took up most of the room the pilot wasn't occupying himself.

There must be plenty of light aircraft over there in Hawaii, so they obviously manage to get them there.

I wonder what the smallest aircraft is they managed to get there.

Here's a video of Hawaii to California with a bit more detail on the preparations and the potential problems, one of which is that, if they had had a problem right after takeoff, they would have had to fly for 8 hours just to get down to the maximum landing weight. This was mentioned in another video in the series:

Sounds like they had fuel problems and had turned back.

The plane flew southwest for about two hours before turning around about 10:40 a.m., according to tracking by Flightradar.

They were running low on fuel and later would report “a fuel transfer system malfunction,” according to Stuckey.

The US west coast to Hawaii is among the longest overwater routes in the world without an enroute divert option.  On North Atlantic crossings you have Iceland...Mid Atlantic there's the Azores and Cape Verde Islands, North Pacific there's Adak and Shemya Islands, South Pacific has lots of island options (Johnston, Wake, Midway, Marshall Islands etc).  But from San Francisco to the big island there's nothing but open water.

I wonder if there was any kind of backup on that fuel transfer system.  Banking on one set of pumps/valves sounds crazy to me...
