I've gotten to like that kind of Jazz the last ten years TBH. Partly, I think this interest was stirred with the theme music for L.A. Noire:

EDIT:

I have a distinct memory of starting the game and then going to the kitchen to do lunch or whatever. Hadn't really listened to it but as I stood in the kitchen doing my thing I listened to the music and was kind of captivated by it.

Another treat for you music lovers out there. I love these spontaneous things:

Irish flight delayed so trad session started between DaoiríFarrell, Geoff Kinsella and Robbie Walsh. - YouTube

Would have loved to be on that delayed flight, and I'd bet my six year old would have danced his socks of to this.

I didn't know that, but you're right, they use modal jazz elements. Nice 🙂

To be honest, at first I had just heard the first minute or so before playing the game itself (which was very enjoyable even though I can't really remember it all these years later and after two kids). Then I started just wanting to listen to the music, so I left it on while doing my lunch or dishes or whatever and I really liked it. I ended up just letting it run while doing whatever, be it studying or cooking or just sitting at the dinner table looking out the window.

It surely kindled my liking of 'jazz-type-music' (well aware I am flaunting my ignorance of jazz here as I have a hard time positioning it in a genre TBH; it just 'felt jazzy' to me).

I am here to learn. Up until now, people in the thread has told me that Mischa plays a 300 year old Cello (had no idea but it gave me goose-bumps). What would you suggest in the way of jazz to a beginner such as myself?

I just discovered this totally unique bit of performance of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor BWV565 on an accordion! His performance was absolutely perfect and is something I would never have believed possible.

Sadly, this brilliant artist passed on during a concert tour in Mexico in February 2018. The accordion world mourns. I just wish the general public would finally recognize the wonderful abilities of the truly amazing classical accordion.

That's a hard question to answer since it is so personal. Since you like Kind of Blue, maybe follow Miles Davis' progression and have a look at his records "My Funny Valentine" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hnjrGvXddo ), "ESP" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyRILF-oKH8 ) and "Nefertiti" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu0IfC_IUaA ). They get increasingly more complex. After that, Miles got into Jazz Rock (1970s) and Jazz Pop (1980s), which is quite different from his 1960s work.

Others continued to work on more quiet forms of Jazz. One of my favorite recordings is Crystal Silence ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKEMlJ97Jj4 ) by Gary Burton and Chick Corea. Anything from these two artists is incredibly good. Another giant is Pet Metheny ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1swufubxips ).

I would say that all these artists would be on the top 50 list of any fan of more modern jazz, but they would add many more. Some artists that I personally like, and which are fairly well known but not in the pantheon of jazz are Holly Cole ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISfiUCU9KwY , from her album Temptations, which features songs by Tom Waits) and Tierney Sutton ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSoAdDlOPiM).

And then, there is another giant between all chairs: Astor Piazzolla ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOlJcWt6JbI). He grew up in Argentina and studied music with Nadja Boulanger in Paris (a student of Igor Stravinsky). She suggested to him using his native  Argentinian tango as an inspiration. The result is an incredible fusion of tango, modern orchestral music, and jazz. The second tune on the Youtube video is Libertango, which was popularized by Grace Jones in the 1980s and used in the movie Frantic with Harrison Ford.

You talked about goose-bumps created by music. I got that with all of the above. My goose-bumps with Crystal Silence and Astor Piazzolla where so big that I started to play vibraphone and bandoneon 🙂

I like hans zimmer track 'time'. For a long flight its not overdynamic but not quiet enough either to lose interest, i find. 🙂

That was AWESOME!! Thanks for posting that, never knew that classical accordion was a thing.  I'm afraid that as a young child, on Saturday nights my parents would monopolize the TV set at 7:00 PM to watch the Lawrence Welk Show & I had no other option than to watch as well.  That show shaped my limited perception of what could be done with an accordion:
