Featured Replies

As per title;

What music do you like? I am currently up on a long flight in the 787 in MSFS and need to pass the time.

Me, as a kid I couldn't be bothered about music as nothing really seemed to catch my fancy. However, one day I sneaked (is 'snuck' maybe more correct word here I don't know) into my big brothers room and found a couple of LPs that caught my eye. Amongst all the boring regular 80's disco I found two albums by Iron Maiden; "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" and "Powerslave". The art of the albums caught the eye of my adolescent mind (Eddie cradling his own heart in one of them). My dear old dad hooked up an old turn table and some speakers so I could listen and I was absolutely gobsmacked by Iron Maiden. I listened to these albums to death (to these days I know the lyrics of all the songs of said albums) my interest in music was born on that day some 30-35 years ago.

Over the years I've listened to just about everything. Even tried playing the guitar, but haven't really had the time to get good at it sadly. These days I listen to just about everything however I've really gotten to love the harder parts. Metal is my go-to. Growling has really grown on me the past years. One of my favourites is a band that actually originates from the city I live in:

Meshuggah - Bleed - Tomas Haake - Wincent Drumsticks - YouTube

But that is not to say I don't like other music. This is an example of music that could actually make me cry because of how good it is:

Mischa Maisky plays Bach Cello Suite No.1 in G (full) - YouTube

Just imagine the skill required to play the Cello Suite flawlessly like that! It's insane and brings a tear to my eye each and every time I listen to it.

In my older days (44 years old now). I've re-discovered (from my 20s) Pink Floyd. My six and eight year old, when they are struck by 'fear of the dark' (Iron Maiden pun), I put them to sleep beside me in the bed with this one:

David Gilmour - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Live At Pompeii) - YouTube

Well, I could go on forever about the music I love these days. How about you guys and gals?

For a little while the past couple of years I was listening to a bit of Namewee (Malaysian artist), (Hello Hater and Fragile). But actually hard for me to listen to pretty much any music anymore, I get annoyed and bored too easily, not sure why.

But I used to love Iron Maiden!

I thought of getting the PMDG DC-6 and listening to some 50s tunes. I got the AS DC-8 and was fascinated by the Vietnam War and hippie era for a little while, and listened to some 60s Beach Boys tunes for a bit while flying from SFO to Saigon, island hopping across the Pacific.

As a classically trained concert pipe organist, I am of course very fond of Mischa's interpretation of Bach. I'm even more intrigued by the history of his cello:

Quote

The Cello you see here is over 300 years old. It was built in 1720 by famed Violoncello builder Domenico Montagnana in Venice, Italy. The anonymous previous owner was a fellow Cellist and admirer of Mischa. On his deathbed at 94 years of age, he offered it to Mischa for a low symbolic price after being moved to tears by his music. This was in 1973, when Misha was only 25. Since then, he has mainly played this Cello, for 50 years now. Its value is estimated at around 5 million Dollars.

I'm not all that "stuck up" since I am very fond of Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller Band, and many others of that genre.

I do not however find any true musical talent with "trash metal" and other head banging sorts of noise.

I am also very fond of choral music, especially men and boys' ensembles.

Except for the obscenity at the beginning, I couldn't quite understand what the singer was saying.

I'm sorry, I didn't understand what growling meant so I looked it up.

As a pro then semi-pro musician i lean to the 60s and 70s Rock and then to 80s Country. Absolutely  can't stand today's garbage.

Thank you.

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name (live) - YouTube

Careful, that's a deep rabbit hole to go down...🤣

That's my 2nd favourite song, ever, followed by Hell On Earth, also by Iron Maiden.

They have a playlist on Youtube of the 2016 Book of Souls world tour (the one with the 747) which is great for a longish flight. Good mix of their old and new stuff, filmed in high quality throughout the tour. Even more impressive when you hear his voice, considering he had just recovered from throat cancer (during which he was studying for his 747 rating). Legend.

Oh, wow! That was indeed intriguing about the cello! I can imagine it’d cost 5 million! I wonder what the fee for the insurance would be.. 😅

Haha no need to apologise. It’s definitely not for everyone. I started liking it as ’pep music’ at the gym and it kept growing on me. Have it in my ears when cycling or running.

I'm glad I'm not the only metalhead here. Sometimes, if cruise is long, I play my Les Paul along the music I listen to. Somehow, I was never fond of growling.

I think they also have a live album. I listen to it almost every time. That, Decades:Live in Buenos Aires (Nightwish) and Black Symphony (Within Tempation). Those are my go-to albums.

My dad was an arranger and worked with many popular musicians in the 50's - 80's so I was around music my whole life. About the only "music" I do not like is rap. Classical, country, rock all of it. From ballads by Nat King Cole , rocking with Tina Turner up to some of today's groups I love it. Rap however, leaves my cold.

We have a local band in the Bay Area with the same name (if you drop the h): Meshugga Beach Party.  Jewish music done in 1960s surf rock style:
