June 30, 20232 yr Doesn't that "other" popular sim require a connection for the best experience? David Porrett

Yes, but technically, you can use MSFS if you lose your internet connection. You lose satellite/photgrammetry data and it just defaults to autogen, which isn't that bad (some people like to turn off satellite/photogrammetry data and use autogen anyways). Furthermore, you can pre-cache satellite/photogrammetry data locally on your hard drive if you use the roaming cache and manual cache function. With respect to this requirement by P3D version 6 to have an internet connection, I bet it's probably for the initial license check when you load P3D. I doubt an internet connection will be required during the flight phase of P3D. I said so as much in the P3D version 6 thread already: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/635302-p3d-6-officially-announced/?do=findComment&comment=4980547. We'll know the answer on July 3rd, but knowing that P3D is used in a closed loop for the military, and I assume some commercial uses of P3D are also closed loop, I would bet that the internet requirement is probably only for the license check only when P3D loads, and internet isn't required after. i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM
June 30, 20232 yr In the future the only limiting factor will be your internet speed streaming will be the future. No need for 4,000 dollar PC that will be done by the sever running on a mainframe, you will only need the app on your PC or devise. Then you open up to a potential customer base of over a billion users. Having home users running PC`s with 2000w PSU is not what the industry wants. Raymond Fry.

June 30, 20232 yr LOL...I am not sure what kind of secret missions you guys are flying with Prepar3d that make so many folks have a melt down because you will need an internet connection. Personally, when I want to waste my time trying to hide from the internet spies, I worry much more about those smart TV's and door bells that transmit to the world what we are doing and who is visiting our homes. If you are worried about having an internet connection then it may be that Flight Simulators are not the best choice for a hobby. Even if you live on a remote Island somewhere then get on your shortwave radio and call the folks at Starlink and see if they can help you out. June 30, 20232 yr As someone whose day job involves working on a widely available consumer software product, the worries about “big brother” are way overblown. Almost all the software on your computer is phoning home with information about what settings you are selecting, what errors you are triggering, what features you use, etc. This is used every day by product teams to improve the product and prioritize investment. I view it as positive if they are collecting data from personal users because it means they care about understanding how we are using their product and plan to do something about it.
June 30, 20232 yr I haven’t seen anyone complain about this issue based on privacy or data collection issues. The main issue with always online DRM is that it’s another point of failure that can only harm the paying customer with zero benefit to the user. 3 minutes ago, CaptainAddOn said: As someone whose day job involves working on a widely available consumer software product, the worries about “big brother” are way overblown. You have a lot more faith and trust in companies than I ever will. Many companies use the data they collect from their customers simply to increase their profits and they even sell the data to other companies to make money without your consent - unless you explicitly opt out. They also provide the data to governments and other groups that then use it for their own, often unscrupulous, purposes. Corporations are made up of individuals, but they act as a collective whose sole purpose is to increase its profit. Then there are the company executives whose motives are often questionable. Trust me, the vast majority of companies do not care about you. I do concede that some may actually use the data to provide a better service or experience, however, this benefits them as well so its not exactly selfless. I always either opt out of the data sharing or turn off those features for any applications I use. Having said all this, I do not consider an internet connection requirement for v6 as a problem. It is likely simply used to validate your license upon startup. If they are collecting other data, then they should be required to inform the user of this and provide an opt out option. Having said that, I also understand that "There is no such thing as a free lunch". It just simply does not exist and it never has. We all want "Free" email, "Free" face palm, "Free" this and "Free" that. Even if the Government gives you a unexpected tax break, it is not free. They expect that it will help buy your support or vote to keep them in power so that they keep getting paid. We can all dream but, in real life you can pay with your data or you can write a check for all that "Free stuff online" each month. It's you choice.
