Ignoring the cockpit and just looking at the view out the window, they're nailed it to me, it looks super realistic now with the clouds and lighting.

Here is one from me flying around the lakes in Poland 🙂

Really, the only thing left for me is the world scenery (yawn, I know, right?). Don’t really want to go back to piecemeal Orbx regions or downloading my own orthos.

Have they said anything commital about it, in roadmaps or even in passing?

My feeling is they're very aware the scenery has a lot of room for improvements, and that's likely what most users want improved now (lighting and weather are already very good and probably best in class, with the recent and still ongoing developments).

I guess it's one of those cases of "easier said than done" though. I doubt LR has the resources afforded by the competition to produce a streaming satellite scenery, so hopefully they will come up with some clever idea.

Good to see, thanks. I especially like the last line about considering more radical approaches.

Streaming satellite scenery I can understand is not viable, but I would hope there are plausible, simpler solutions which could have a big effect. Something like running legacy textures through Midjourney to spruce them up?

No, sadly not. The new lighting can make the default scenery look ok, but it's still just that, the old default scenery

Just updated Orbx regions would be good enough. Updated to recent satellite imagery, colourised, textured and offer more regions of the world, similar to World Updates of the other sim.

Just an update from Ben after B4;

https://developer.x-plane.com/2023/08/please-auto-report-your-crashes/

X-Plane 12.06 beta 4 is out – we pushed for a second beta this week because I’ll be out of the office next week and the installer-making machine lives in my basement, so beta five will hopefully be in about ten days. Here’s some release notes.

The team has fixed a bunch of big bugs this week, including water flashing, clicking problems with mouse-flies and a bunch of crash bugs.

The Crash Reporter…Crashed?!?

XPD-14312 was a meta-bug: the bug was that on Mac, when the sim crashed, it would hang instead of showing the auto-crash-reporting box. I’d like to use this bug as an excuse for a public service announcement:

Please always auto-report your crashes.

Our crash reporting system automatically de-duplicates crash reports but also counts the number of crashes and can tell us the number of unique users affected; we count on repeated reporting of the same crash to get a picture of the most severe crash bugs affecting the entire community. By always reporting auto-reporting the crash, you’re up-voting the importance of fixing the crash and giving us valuable insights into what’s hurting our users the most.

Do I Need to Also File A Bug?

The short answer is: no. If you auto-report a crash you do not need to file a bug.

Filing a bug can be useful if you have exact reliable steps to reproduce the bug. In this case, please file the bug, include the clear steps to reproduce, and include a Log.txt from after the crash was auto-reported. These crash logs will have a “crash UUID” at the end that lets us locate your crash inside our system.

Please do not file a bug for a crash if you do not know how to reproduce it. “I was flying and the sim just crashed, I don’t know why” provides us with no useful clues; everything we can act on is already in the auto-crash report.

What’s Next

We’re trying to wrap 12.06 up; the rest of the beta will focus on a few more rendering bugs, weather bugs, and VR bugs. While we are not going to do a massive real weather overhaul, I do have to fix the bug where it rains for no reason.

LOL, I would also add live traffic, or some sort of plausible traffic anyway. Something that does not kill performances like the current implementation and can interact correctly with ATC.
This would be super easy to implement too. A big check to Justflight and job done. Laminar already has the right developer in house.

Scenery is a big issue which is partially alleviated by the use of x-world to cover up some of the nastiness. Thankfully we have Armin doing this but why is Laminar not reaching out to him and include some of that work in the default product?

I have to admit the sky is looking really close to real life 90% of the time.  Well done Laminar.  Clouds from afar look excellent.  Hope they can increase the voxel density for near clouds eventually - still kinda a downside.

Still need AA improvements but the sim is really coming along now.

(AKD v2 just came out!)

I reported this around 3 days ago and they fixed it really quickly. Had no idea it was caused by shadows, but rather thought it was something Mac OS related.

That would just tie us to those regions. Not much help if I want to fly in the other 90% of the world.

i mean expanding them from the XP11 version to cover wider areas, regions, continents.

yum 🙂

my "misuse" i.e. my VR headsets misbehavior of going to sleep a few minutes after not wearing it to protect it's LCD screens from burn ins, has not caused any such crash problems with any other game or any other flightsimulator.

thanks for again blaming the user for a potential bug/problem which x-plane obviously doesn't handle well.

you deployed the reverses in-flight (nonsense), but your fault.

you crash landed the Citation before you deployed the thrust reversers (again nonsense, happens during taxi on the ground with thrust reversers deployed), again your fault.

you used a default aircraft and expected it to behave somewhat basically realistically? again your fault. unless specifically labeled: "study level", whatever that may mean, user has to accept such comical behavior (Citation falls over on its back "expected behaviour" 😊) from default aircraft that ship with xplane.

The fact that you're pretty much the only person complaining about these largely self-inflicted "imperfections" is proof enough of PEBKAC.
