I also have not been on a real A300 but I watched some videos of Flightdeck operations and the packs are indeed ludicrously loud in the real thing.

You hit the nail on the head. Same situation when the 777 came out. I saw a bunch of complaints but when I checked videos, the cockpit air consistently drowned out the engines.
