APL (A Pilot's Life) Discussion

Bob,

Here is the wikipedia page that shows the members of the very real Star Alliance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Alliance#Member_airlines_and_affiliates

This alliance exists in real life. I am having trouble finding where Southwest is on this list? Can you point it out to me?

Here are the wiki links to the other 2, very real alliances. Can you show me where Southwest is a member of those alliances?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oneworld#Member_airlines

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyTeam#Member_airlines

Since you are claiming that Southwesft not being in these alliances is "not realistic" I must be missing something.

I fly much of the time in the US. Southwest flies in the US, as well as FedEx, Jet Blue, Alaska, etc. etc. etc. These are real airline flights, which A Pilots LIfe has and Alliance does not.

Which is fine, but it is not fair to call the Star Alliance ommission of Southwest unlealistic.

Clearly, A Pilot's Life works very well for you. Good for you for finding a tool you enjoy using. Seriously. The Star Alliance flights are also real airline flights that represent the members routes and airframes. Yeah, if you want to fly Southwest you need a diferent source of route information.

None of us are trying to change your mind. The VA discussion, to be fair, was probably better served in the recent discussion on good VAs.

I have been flying VAs for over a dozen years. They have nothing to do with A PIlots LIfe, and don't know why they are even mentioned in this thread.

Because having off-topic tangents is on brand for AVsim? 🙂

Just looked at the Star alliance website. Pretty limited as far as the airlines they have. No Delta, No Southwest, No American Airlines, etc. etc.

American - OneWorld

Alaska - OneWorld

Delta - SkyTeam

United - StarAlliance

As mentioned you can fly for all 3 VAs.

JetBlue and Southwest aren't part of any of the 3 airline alliances but they are part of the code-sharing network, or at least JetBlue are. Southwest did advertise for a senior manager of "Airline Partnerships" back in 2022 so alliances are very real.

Now that the confusion has been cleared up can we talk more about how the developer of APL has no intention of accepting constructive ideas for the software??

And for Southwest VA and for JetBlue VA and for Ryanair VA and for FedEx VA and for UPS VA… and after an entire year I have 7 flights in each of them and still at the First Rank. Using multiple VAs waters down the purpose of VAs. I could also just Look at flightradar for flights, because scoring and Ranking up wont matter anyway when I‘m flying for 10 different VAs. APL does Not have this Problem

I h ave flown for this VA for years. You can fly any airline, anywhere, and any aircraft. No hoops to have to have jump through. https://flyvirtual.net/index.php/

But this is really the other extreme: No flying schedules, no comittment to one /  small number of airlines etc. APL finds the sweet spot in-between.

Also, @Fiorentoni there are plenty of short haul routes. I am like you and anything over 2 hours is long,

No, I *want* to fly a fully loaded Lufthansa 747-8 to Brazil, but not in real time. Time compression makes it possible to takeoff and fly with a very heavy long haul jet and finish the flight within 3-4 hours. I need this, there is no way around this. But VAs do not allow this; APL does.

I'd love to do a world tour in StarAlliance, but I simply cannot do this without time compression. Even worse, I can't even fly an A320 from EDDF to the Canary Islands because this takes 5 hours minimum.

https://flyvirtual.net/index.php/FrontSchedules    Look at the list of airlines, see  if you can find one missing....???

No I meant it's too much freedom of choice. Being in a VA (or with APL) needs to have some feeling of being a pilot of a certain airline and being obligated to some schedule sort of.

The only problem I have is with the generated scheduler, which dimishes the overall product IMHO. This is not a pissing contest. All of the above mentioned VAs cover all the needs of the user depending on what they are looking for.

Man, I hear ya. Even with the Oneworld etc. alliance VAs I get1 analasys paralysis for what and where to fly. Some times I regret joining any VA (I like the community aspect, though), and just flying RW routes I have documented.

Yeah us flight simmers are quite fastidious 😄

All  you have to do is pick and airline, and there are hundreds of them, then search for airports, or aircraft, and mileage of flight, and it will show you available flights,Same as any VA.
