The popup appears, says it's deleting the old version, shows a "Quick Update" button ... then hangs. I have to close it manually. Re-launching from then on (using my old shortcut) brings up the .NET runtime - presumably because AutoFPS has been deleted <?>. The only way around it is to grab the latest build (from your link) and reinstalling. What am I doing wrong?

Generally, the only reason the app would hang when deleting the old version is if one of the files in the %appdata%\MSFS_AutoFPS\bin folder is being locked by another process, such as having one of the documents files open in a reader like notepad or a pdf viewer, or you have made the folder or any of the files within it read only. Is that possibly occurring? 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11

I don't have any of the files open in Notepad either - but I'll check that.

I was able to simulate what you say you experienced just before, but only once and that was by having the readme.md file in that bin folder open in notepad when I ran the auto update. Strangely, I could not get it to do it again under the same test conditions. Nonetheless, I will take a look at the installer code and try to make it more robust when deleting the old version and perhaps provide a warning if something is locked that shouldn't be before it goes semi-nuclear on that folder or at the very least restore what was there before if it does fail. 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
August 17, 2025Aug 17 Good to hear it's happened to you - if only occasionally. I do have a thought: I have Notepad++ set up as my default text editor, but the Release Notes.txt always pops up the regular Windows Notepad - but it might be in the background and I don't see it. Maybe not auto-launching the release notes would help? Or make it a [selectable/check box] option <?>. Edited August 17, 2025Aug 17 by Adamski_NZ

It only happened for me if I went out of my way to have something open I would not normally have open. As for the release notes, the installer already does a check to see if this particular file is open and warns you, as shown below, so maybe I will just extend it to include all txt, md and pdf files as an extra precaution. 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11

Maybe not auto-launching the release notes would help? Or make it a [selectable/check box] option <?>. I've just released 0.4.5.5-test3 here, which has the following changes relevant to our discussion on this issue, which will hopefully resolve it or at the very least give you information to give me on what is actually being locked so I can look into that further: Test3: Added option to allow the user to suppresss future warning messages if an FPS cap is being erroneously detected in FPS sensitivity and tolerance modes and it is the same as the target FPS. Revised quick update installation delay from 1 to 2 seconds to allow for more reliable installation of updates. Added file lock checking before deletion of old files during update installation to prevent issues with file locks, including one retry after 5 seconds if the initial detection indicated a locked file(s). Revised quick update installation process to not continue through and open the newly installed app if the update installation failed, instead keeping the installation window open and showing what error messages occurred. Example failure simulated during testing by manually making README.md read only. If the installation fails like this, your original MSFS_AutoFPS installation should remain intact, although it will prompt you to auto update when it runs, which can say no to if it keeps failing and you don't want to try again and notifications will revert to Show Updates instead. BTW, once the auto update has tried to install at least once, the installer will be located in your Downloads folder, so no need to re download if you want to try a manual install instead. I'll give it a whirl 🙂 Make sure you use the auto update feature from your current version as that will test drive the new quick installer code properly. And if you do get any error, post up a screen shot for me to look into. August 17, 2025Aug 17 Auto-updated to 4.5.5 Test3 with no errors or warnings :) However - it still fired up default Notepad, rather than my Notepad++ (associated for TXT files). Is AutoFPS hard coded to look for Notepad rather than the assigned/associated editor <?>.

Yes it is hard coded to use notepad, primarily because I know every system has it and it is only for viewing the release notes so no fancy editor is really required. BTW, I know that always opening the release notes may annoy some users, but for the vast majority not on the test program they update very infrequently anyway and for those on the test program who get these updates much more often, that is part of being in the test program whereby I want them to know what has changed between test versions for testing feedback. A simple click of the the big red X in the top right of notepad makes it disappear instantly, so it should not be too onerous for anyone, even if they don't care what is in the update.
