There is another saying "all things come to those who wait", The inability to cope with any delay for any reason is the bane of the modern world, especially, but not limited to, the internet. Like everything, it is difficult to generalise due to the varying circumstances. I was promised a fibre connection more than three years ago by Open Reach. It was 'only three months away' to take me from my measly and unreliable 5mbps (if I am lucky) to up to 1Gbps (if I wanted it) as it will be a reliable Gigabit fibre connection they proudly boasted. Great! Obviously as you will understand, MSFS updates are a problem for me. Even the initial install took over three days. I have now waited over three years from their email saying I could have their precious Fibre connection, going through so much stress you wouldn't believe when the old line goes down in the rain, affecting my livelihood even. On enquiring what was happening last October, I was told 'we now have no plans to upgrade your area in the near future, but may be looked at again within the next three years' by some joker, who reacted to my astonishment by saying 'well, you may get it eventually - patience is a virtue!'. So you can probably understand my adverse reaction to that phrase. After making that comment I nearly asked the joker where his actual word not allowed was sat, so I could explain it to him in person how virtuous I could be. I decided instead to just exercise a phone drop and avoid any further stress. So yes, it depends on the situation, but I hope you can see my point. Waiting all these years for something because some fools can't plan or give out false information doesn't seem to make me feel any more virtuous. (I wish it did). As for 'all things come to those who wait' - they don't always. We are all shuffling closer to the end of life's mortal coil every day, and some of us, like me, are a lot closer to the end unfortunately. Sadly, there are lots of things I won't get to see. March 1, 20242 yr This is not 100% on topic (but also not 100% off topic). Im surprised more people don’t mention using VPN. By testing different locations I’ve managed to get 100+ Mbps from the usual pitiful 2-3… Edited March 1, 20242 yr by Cpt_Piett 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

Maybe it is, but for people who are suffering the frustration, it seems to just brush off their concerns and just winds them up further. It just seems like a throw-away remark that doesn't help anyone. Maybe it is to try to get a laugh out of the situation. To top it all off, I spend nearly £1,000 on setting up a two year 5G contract, with a costly outside antenna set-up so I can get a half decent signal (50mbps), and log in to MSFS to decide it wants to let me download at 1.5mbps for an hour or two before I can fly! At that stage I tend to just let it run overnight and just go to bed. Still, patience is a virtue! Edited March 1, 20242 yr by bobcat999 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). By testing different locations I’ve managed to get 100+ Mbps from the usual 2-3… Yes, I have tried that at times. Sometimes there is some download speed variance, other times not. Maybe it depends on what server you pick - in whichever part of the world. Once again, it is a pretty poor state of affairs though why this might happen. I have always been on unlimited data with all of my providers, so I shouldn't have been throttled (especially at my speeds! ). Any idea why this happens (greater speeds through a VPN?). I haven't logged into MSFS for a few days as I am dreading the big new beta update just released (some say it is about 9Gb). Obviously it is a problem for me, especially if my 5G drops to 20 Mbps at peaks times, as it regularly does, or if the MSFS servers decide to go slowly. The statement from MS/Asobo on MSFS2024 having a 'light client' sends shivers of worry down mine spine, as they can't seem to cope with the data transfer now, and the servers are prone to unreliability as we have seen here and there. Hard disk space isn't expensive now, but if I have to continuously stream everything at speeds high enough to prevent stuttering, that will push people like me out of the picture. I would rather just set up a three-four day download, night and day, and dump it all on an SSD and have done with it. Edited March 1, 20242 yr by bobcat999 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). The trick is to just try many different servers until you hit jackpot. Then everything will be blissful and you’ll find yourself in an elated state. I’ve always thought of server congestion as the most likely cause. Dunno, it remains a mystery. However I’ve found on numerous occasions that choosing a server with a roughly 12 hr time difference brings the greatest chance of success. I’m using Proton VPN, there’s a free version, give it a try! Edited March 1, 20242 yr by Cpt_Piett 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

I've had Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet for nearly three years now. It has been very reliable in all weathers, with my average download speed is about 150-200MBs. However, speeds of 300MBs are seen often. Latency is low enough to play online games too. Starlink satellites are low earth orbit, so much lower latency than a traditional satellite service. I live on a narrowboat on a UK canal miles from anywhere. I had an internet connection through a dongle with EE, getting download speeds of up to 10MBs. Downloads from Steam were about 2MBs. MSFS itself took days to download. With Starlink, I download on steam at an average of over 200Mbs. It is quite amazing to be so remote but get such good Internet speeds! March 1, 20242 yr Just to contribute to the original poster's message: I'm using MSFS on Steam on a Windows 10 computer. Just earlier this week, I launched my MSFS and it required me to perform what looked like a full reinstall, and asked me for an installation path. After thinking about what was going on for a few seconds, I realized that I had forgotten to launch the XBox app prior to launching MSFS. So I closed MSFS directly without confirming anything. I launched the XBox app, waited to the home screen to load, closed the XBox window (but kept the "X" icon in the traybar), and relaunched MSFS right away. Bingo, normal loading as if nothing happened 🙂 Conclusion is: from my experience, when MSFS asks for a full reinstall, it's because it 'forgot" where it was installed. And it probably forgot because it couldn't identify you. And to be identified properly, you need to be logged in properly to the XBox Live network, which is easily achieved by launching the little XBox application. It's already the 3rd time it happens to me since my original install 3 years ago. Same cause, same solution, every time. I never had to reinstall 🙂 Edited March 1, 20242 yr by Daube

Sure. That situation is even worse than mine. I feel sorry for you. I just want to clarify my irritable comments weren't aimed at you by the way, but just the way that old proverb sets me off, as I am quite a patient person for the vast majority of things, but my patience for under-performing multi-million (or Billion) pound / dollar companies tends to wear a bit thin! Anyway, Friday now, nearly the weekend, and nearly time to de-stress with a nice meal and a drink. Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). If you don’t do things in the exact order, or forget a tiny step, then BAM! - full reinstall for you… I’ve had it “suggest” a full reinstall a couple of times since Aug ‘22. I usually sense the shenanigans and punish MSFS by terminating it from the taskbar 👺 Other times it suddenly asks for the installation location (like it’s suddenly forgotten), and I have to help it remember by entering my custom location of C:\MSFS Edited March 1, 20242 yr by Cpt_Piett 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5
March 1, 20242 yr The slow downloads are definitely on their end and kind of random. I had zero problems downloading the last world update (while many did), yet this latest small update took several minutes. Sometimes small updates in the marketplace take forever too. It isn't our connections, as it works sometimes just fine. I play MSFS on PC, but I own an Xbox, and updates/downloads do the same thing there. Sometimes I get a 2mb update that takes minutes to run. Other times I can download an entire game in 15 minutes. It isn't all our connections. I have no problems with things like Steam, online games, etc. ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
