Screenshot Comparison MSFS 2024 vs MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

Inspired by @Tuskin38's screenshots posted in the “New MSFS 2024 Trailer - Release date: 11/19/2024” thread, I searched for some other locations from the trailer to compare them with the current sim.

  • Yes, true.  With Windows Map app. The scenery looked very Italian to me, so I searched for a place in Italy with smaller hills and a mountain range in the background. There were actually only 2

  • I think the comparison they did during the FSExpo in the Yosemite valley near the river is enough to illustrate. MSFS 2024 does not build the terrain in the same "traditional" way that MSFS 2020 was s

  • Never thought I'd say this four years later but 2020 looks ugly now and the other sims look hideous!

Aside from the lighting, I don't see much difference between the two versions as far as imagery goes. I'm not sure, but maybe the DEM is a little more detailed in the Aspen 2024 screenshot (e.g. that ridge on the bottom right). Hard to say. The snow definitely looks better in MSFS 2024.

This mountain looks amazing (photogrammetry I guess). Unfortunately I haven't found it yet. Any ideas where it could be?

Ouch... that water looks terrible... The waves are WAY TOO BIG! Totally out of proportion! Asif they pasted a close up shot from water into the picture. I really prefer the 2020 screenshot when it comes to the water...

Nice comparisons btw!

Along with Lighting(global illumination), shadows, sky rendering, atmospheric haze and dynamic range of colours are also much improved. Msfs2024 looks like a pre rendered cutscene compared to 2020.

This thunderstorm screenshot impressed me the most. Love the blueish lighting on CB clouds. The evening blue light when the sun goes down is perfectly depicted here. This was completely missing from 2020. Those clouds look dangerous although their form and shape could be further improved.

Shame you won’t see them on the weather radar and can simply fly through them……

Hmm, your LA screenshot looks better than the one from the trailer. I guess (hope) that's because of the zoom.

I guess it's the youtube compression. It will never look as crisp as an actual screenshot from your own screen.

Also, as always, I like the comparisons you do. It's best way yo see if there are any changes/improvements.
