Screenshot Comparison MSFS 2024 vs MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

I think the comparison they did during the FSExpo in the Yosemite valley near the river is enough to illustrate. MSFS 2024 does not build the terrain in the same "traditional" way that MSFS 2020 was still using. For us helicopter and bush pilots, it's going to be quite a blast !!

I'm very curious to see how the procedural ground will look like in other areas of the world.

If the ground and scenery is as good as the trailers and Jorg is claiming it is in MSFS 2024, yeah, I can't believe I am saying it too, but MSFS 2020 kind of looks last generation compared to MSFS 2024. And it's only been 4 years between both version.

MSFS 2020 already looks so much better than them. And MSFS 2024 looks so much better than MSFS 2020. When MSFS 2024 comes out, it will look like 2 generations between MSFS 2024 and the other sims.

Wait until you sit in the gorgeous cockpit of the FlyByWire A380 or the BlueBird 757, you will not even really look at the scenery outside anymore and get fully immersed into the cockpit functions and after take-off into the new visual effects and lighting effects in the clouds the new sim will have to offer.

Yes FS2020 and FS2024 scenery look similar on the screenshots. But it´s the new features physics possibilities and planes that makes it so interesting. 🙂

On my part, I want them to keep improving on both sides. Flight Model/Physics improvements and also continued scenery updates (and also all the other fronts, like persistent world). I don't fly tubeliners that much. These days The Longitude and the Learjet 45 were the bigger planes I used. Most of flights are low and slow (really excited to experience the new scenery).

Sorry I do not agree with this. For the rest; yes. 🙂

Jörg said on Saturday that Microsoft had acquired 1 million square kilometers of "countryside TIN". That's about the size of France, Germany and Iceland combined. Or four times the size of the UK. His long-term prediction is that one day the whole world will look like this!

I know trailers always look great and these "photogrammetry for countryside" areas could turn out to be a LOD popping/morphing nightmare. But even so, I think this scene clearly shows that we can expect massive visual improvements in MSFS 2024.

That's insane, but I think it's long (loooooooong) term thing. I mean, it's not even about capabilities, they have it, it's about getting permisions to scan everywhere, or even being able to find the pilots/companies to do that. I mean, in the last Q&As Jörg said they couldn't finish two PG updates: Hawaii (the pilot/company just bailed out) and Brazil (metheorological problems and getting the authorizations).

Unless, of course, some day new tech make it even easier (I don't know, maybe in the future satellites will be able to do it).

How about visual improvements to everything above the tree tops, that is to say cloud and weather depiction?  Any valid news yet re this area of the sim?

It also improved, in my opinion. The new lighting/atmosphere made it look so much better. We don’t know what’s under the hood AKA weather engine, but it looks good so far.

They've added cirrus clouds.

Actual news will come later.

They dont brag about weather so I'm not holding my hopes up. But we'll see when the discovery series starts. They did talk about better storms last year and name dropped "super cells" at this years expo, so thats the only sliver of hope I have for weather.

I do hope more that weather changes that they add better cloud shapes and denser. Especially for smaller clouds. They just look like small smoke blobs that you can see right through!

Ya weather related topics wise they've only spoken about the new atmospherics and lighting engine, which they say also helps improve the definition and rendering of clouds.

And also new cirrus cloud types (not clear if cirrus will show up in live weather however, remains to be seen).

They did speak about improved storms, supercells, tornadoes last year, so let's see (did they mention supercells at this year's expo?, I missed it maybe).. on an interview at this year's expo they confirmed tornadoes will be in manual weather only since it's quite hard to get live weather data/predictions for them.

The other weather related info mentioned at this year's interviews was the 24hr historic weather feature, that'll come post launch after they sort out the data provider.

Hopefully one of the deep dives will be on weather.

It is far from ugly.

MS2024 looks great of course, but 2020 can still look spectacular if you don't limit yourself to default textures, weather and lighting. Four years is a long time these days considering the speed increase in technology, so 2020 is 'showing its age', but I can still look out of the simulated cockpit and be amazed at the scene before me.

Same for the other sims.  Out of the box they can look poor, but with a few addons they too can look very good indeed.

Only if 'similar' means 'vastly improved'.

Yeah, I think they aren’t aiming anything disruptive, but incremental changes. And to be fair, if they resolve all the issues with the data provider, things will work as intended. The data is there, the engine is capable of rendering everything needed to depict the data, but it isn’t. They just need to figure this out.
