252 Mbps too slow for MSFS2020?

It would be less annoying if these messages weren't displayed in the worst possible screen position. After a perfect 2 hour flight, you are just approaching the flare point and your view is suddenly obscured by a bandwidth message while you pancake onto the runway🙄

Apparently, it is too difficult to bother to change the position of the messages in 2020 , but they are attending to it in 2024 and placing these messages in a more appropriate position.

So there you go.  Lucky aren't we, well... If we buy 2024 that is.

If their bandwidth issue was solved there would be no need for the messages to pop-up in the first place of course.

That's interesting Bruce. I got this message the other day, only once and not ever again since. Very odd.

Ignore the wording of this message.  It should say "unable to contact servers".  There's nothing wrong with your system, it is problems on their servers.  Everyone gets this message regularly.

It might be a problem with MS servers, but that is not guaranteed. No MSFS user has a direct connection between their ISP and MS servers. There could be 10 (or more) intermediate routers, operated by multiple networking providers, between your computer and the MS Azure servers, and high latency or packet loss at any one of them could cause apparent bandwidth issues.

And it is not just in the downstream direction where problems could arise - scenery in MSFS is sent using the TCP protocol, meaning every incoming data packet has to be acknowledged back to the originating server. If there are issues in the outgoing (upstream) connection - either at your ISP or at any intermediate router, that could cause slow data transfer.

Steaming services for video and audio like Netflix, use the UDP protocol where incoming packets do not have to be acknowledged back to the source, and dropped packets are acceptable.

There is no question that MS servers have had problems and even complete outages, but not every “your bandwidth is too low” message is necessarily an indication of a problem at the MS server end. In the four years I have been using MSFS I have never had that message even once, and I fly almost every day.

I have had occasional “you have been disconnected” messages, but those usually resolve themselves within a few moments.

My ISP is Spectrum Cable in the US northeast with 200MB speed. One thing that might account for my good results is the fact that I have a very high performance (and very expensive) Netgear RAXE500 router, which is optimized specifically for supporting multiple high-speed streams. Some routers, (especially those often supplied in WiFi packages by ISPs) are of very poor quality.

OK I think I have figured out what has happened - following the recent update my Microsoft Premium Deluxe edition has been summarily deleted - it is in the MS Store as purchased but not installed.  If I go into Xbox it says the only version of MSFS2020 installed is the standard game pass one.  The Premium Deluxe and 40th Anniversary edition while owned are not installed.  I assume this is not a remote server issue but that the recent update has scrambled my MSFS2020 install.  This is a first for me I have never had issues with updates before. How do I proceed without redownloading hundreds of gigabytes of stuff?

OK! This sounds more like a login problem.  When your purchased version/installation is not identified correctly is the indication.  Have you logged out of both xbox and msstore at the same time, rebooted system, and logged back in to both?  May or may not be the cause, but only takes 3-4 minutes to find out.

I am in a two person household with a 200 MBPS subscription, fly MSFS on ultra settings at 4K, am suscribed to youtubeTV streaming.  I can fly, watch live sports on an adjacent TV while my wife watches a streaming movie in the other room, while also using her iPad and iPhone, both connected to the local network.   No problems.....

Technically you are correct, it COULD be lots of things, but the facts are that MS servers frequently have problems.  There's new threads on it every day (sometimes several), from download problems to this message.  Rather than send people on a mostly pointless chase for phantom problems, assume it is the server, since that's the case almost every time.  Most of us have had the 200mb patch take 45 minutes to download and constantly get stuck.

If your local connection has issues, you'll know about it.  If there's a problem somewhere else, there's nothing to be done.

Thanks tried that didn't work - looking like a reinstall.

It's not just you.  The same thing happened to me.  I've never had to reinstall any of my previous 3 MSFS2020 products since installing them over 4 years ago.  And they had always been available on my Microsoft Store page for downloads.  But not now.  When I went to do a reinstall now my Microsoft Store page showed only ONE of my 3 products as "owned" and regardless of which product I selected I would get "pushed" to the Xbox page from the Store page.  There I showed all 3 products but I only had to download and install ONE of them to get all 3 of them installed because 2 of them were listed as "bundles" of either the first 2, or all 3 of, the products.  And they all seemed to insist on also installing the "Digital Ownership" version (?) in its own separate folder too.  That was totally confusing after never having to download any of the 3 products separately from the MS Store for almost 4 years.  It looks like everything MSFS2020 on the MS Store will now involuntarily "push" you to the Xbox site to get any of you products now.  And the "push" seems to be designed to get you to sign up for the monthly Xbox subscription to even use MSFS2020 if you are on a PC.  At least that's what happened to me.  Sounds like the same things may have been happening to you.
