252 Mbps too slow for MSFS2020?

Featured Replies

Yes that is my internet download speed (I checked it just now) not real fast but not too shabby - however according to MSFS2020 I don't have enough bandwidth for data streaming. But it did download today's update. So what is going on?

Do you mean that "Not enough bandwidth" message you get while flying at times? I have 1GB Fiber and had that happen many times, though not recently. I just chalked it up to  Microsoft's Servers getting hammered with requests or something.

I have half your speed however remember a speed test is only a snapshot of time between you, your ISP and the test site which in all likelihood never has the same amount of traffic compared to MS servers and all it's global "clients/gamers" etc..".  As mentioned above it's more likely to do with MS servers rather than your own connection.

As a plumber once said to me, it's not just about how fast it travels through the pipe, it's also about how wide the pipe is or how many bends it contains 🙂

OK apologies for the typos but the problem has now progressed as I now get stuck at the start flight screen except there is no "Fly Now" option visible so I can go no further even with offline mode selected.  This is with an empty community folder.

I would say that low latency is just as important than the actual speed. Keep an eye on the latency time too.

I have a 38Mbs connection and only occasionally get a low bandwidth error. It's definitely more likely to be a server issue than a local bandwidth issue.

OK I think I have figured out what has happened - following the recent update my Microsoft Premium Deluxe edition has been summarily deleted - it is in the MS Store as purchased but not installed.  If I go into Xbox it says the only version of MSFS2020 installed is the standard game pass one.  The Premium Deluxe and 40th Anniversary edition while owned are not installed.  I assume this is not a remote server issue but that the recent update has scrambled my MSFS2020 install.  This is a first for me I have never had issues with updates before. How do I proceed without redownloading hundreds of gigabytes of stuff?

Exact same thing happened to me a couple hours ago.  Everything I tried to "fix" it failed.  Xbox nor MS Store would let me re-install anything, so I gave up and uninstalled everything (only thing it WOULD let me do), cleaned up all scavenger leftover folders and files, and I'm currently 100 GB into download of 134 GB.  But I'm pretty sure that's gonna be just the first of many more LONG downloads because the download speed sucks right now too.

When you get a pop up saying "you don't have sufficient bandwidth" microsoft means that "we are not supplying sufficient bandwidth from our servers".  It's time that they corrected that misleading message

It happens way too often and as well as being very annoying and inconvenient it is unacceptable to keep happening on such a frequent basis.  When you pay for a service, you should reasonably be able to expect that service.

Occasionally it can just be down to slow servers in a specific location and some of us have had some success connecting via a good VPN.

If you run the installation again after it downloads the initial files in the default c:/ drive location, make sure you point the next step in the installation after you start the sim to the folder where MSFS is currently installed.

If you have the current main installation in a different location to default you would need to point the program to this folder e.g. I have the essential core installation on my c:/ drive but the bulk of the program is on g:\MSFS2020\Official\OneStore so in my case I would point the second stage of the installation after starting the sim to g:\MSFS2020

Well, something has changed, because I also had my original core install files on my (PC) C: drive and the rest of it in a D:\MSFS2020  folder, where there was always ONLY a Community and Official folder like you say it should work.  But after uninstalling and getting FORCED (this time?) to use the Xbox App to reinstall everything, when I got to the point of telling it where to put the D:\ MSFS2020 stuff, the ONLY choice it gave me was to use a default "D:\XBOX GAMES" folder, or create another folder myself.  So I created the D:\MSFS2020 folder, and the darned installation then created TWO SUBFOLDERS in it...one named "Microsoft Flight Simulator" with ONE subfolder named "Content"... and another named "Microsoft Flight Simulator Digital Ownership" with a bunch of cryptic other stuff in it.  I didn't ask for any "Digital Ownership", have no desire to use the "Pay Per Month" Xbox wallet drainer fee, and as a PC user would really just like to be able to download the installation file(s) myself and put them where I want them without jumping through all these hoops.

For this re-install the Microsoft Store FORCED me to do the install using the Xbox App, as opposed to when the initial install several years ago (and all previous updates since then) were available as separate downloads from within the Microsoft Store itself. I have no idea what the heck is going on with it now, as this CORE re-install ALSO got put on my D;\ drive buried in a new  "WpSystem.......Local Cache\Packages\Community (and) Official..." folders THERE.  And it appears all my current World Update re-installs are beings added to that "Original" folder location now (along with I'm assuming everything else I continue to download from Content Manager will too).

This whole process is just silly.  And with all the "server problems" lately, and the "push" now to get even the MSFS2020 users to "join" the "monthly convenience fee" for Xbox "gaming" now, it would not surprise me to see MSFS2024 become a "pay per month for server use subscription" thing.  Seriously...how could a company sell a one-time fee for a program that MUST use server downloads every time the user uses the program, and NOT expect "server bandwidth problems" if the program sells enough to overload the server capabilities for an extended time period of like the 4 years we've all been already doing it? We PC users are "locked in" to using servers that are also supplying Xbox users now for all their OTHER games too.  There's no such thing as a free lunch for us unless MS out of the goodness of their hearts says, "Yeah, we'll invest a ton of money to upgrade our server capability just to keep the "free" FS PC server users happy."

Yeah, I'm not very optimistic about any of this right now. 😇

It would be less annoying if these messages weren't displayed in the worst possible screen position. After a perfect 2 hour flight, you are just approaching the flare point and your view is suddenly obscured by a bandwidth message while you pancake onto the runway🙄

Yeh that was exactly what happened to me too. I went into content manager and noticed I needed what seemed to be approx 180gb downloaded that I had already downloaded original install. I just selected everything again and had an early night. It was done by morning.

I haven't even run the sim for a week as getting round to editing hours of footage down to highlights for my YouTube channel. Been keeping track of server issues I hope they're solved when I try to fly again tomorrow or tonight.

Ignore the wording of this message.  It should say "unable to contact servers".  There's nothing wrong with your system, it is problems on their servers.  Everyone gets this message regularly.
