August 9, 20241 yr On a nearby Island to Guernsey, called Sark, they do "sheep racing." I see no reason why sheep racing shouldn't be included as an Olympic sport. Along with fireball shin kicking and that thing kung fu monks do with the "man ball" kicking. Medieval MMA too, for sure. Edited August 9, 20241 yr by martin-w

I've tried to find a picture, but as it was a wooden novelty toy dating from around 1920 or there about, I'm not surprised. I'll attempt to describe it as best as I can. It consists of a wooden dowl around six inches long and a much larger dowl with a peg hole drilled into the bottom. Those two parts were connected with a small rope about twelve inches long. The object was to hold the small dowl in one's hand and attempt to toss the larger piece in the air and "catch" the larger object such that it would end up with the small handle in the hole drilled into the larger piece. This "woodendoit" was made by my mother's father to keep she and her siblings entertained whilst traveling in their wagon as they migrated from Missouri to Florida back in the day. My mom encouraged me to play with it as the adults discussed important matters when we visited with the family in Bowling Green, Florida at Christmas time. I believe I only managed to "win" the toss twice in the six or so years of visiting. Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

Instead of the ball, the small handle would be separate from the larger cylinder and connected by the string. Either way, the objective is the same. Thanks! Fr. As I wrote previously, in the six or so years we spent every Christmas at the family's large country house, I believe I only manage to catch it twice out of hundreds of attempts. My Aunt Amelia and an elderly gentleman lived in the family's large home and they had no indoor plumbing until long after we had moved from Miami Springs, FL to Oklahoma City, OK in the mid-fifties. They had a "two hole" outhouse set back near the orange groves about 20 yards from the backdoor. I slept in a large bedroom on the second floor and would have to have lit a kerosene lantern if I needed to visit the loo. However, I rarely did that, opting instead to use the window, as I was frightened by the utter darkness in the middle of the night! Keep in mind I was only three years old the first time I spent Christmas there... 😮 Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
