Nobody has "smelled" space. To do that, your nostrils would have to be in direct contact with it.....and you really don't want that.

Interesting!  So what were the astronauts describing?  The smell of their own farts?  For the one(s) smelling
gunpowder...Wow!  I just got off a good one!  Let's see what happens when I strike a match! 🧨

We can't smell space directly, because our noses don't work in a vacuum. But astronauts aboard the ISS have reported that they notice a metallic aroma – like the smell of welding fumes – on the surface of their spacesuits once the airlock has re-pressurised.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Wow... an astronaut in a SpaceX suit now doing a spacewalk? Never seen before. I thought these suits weren't as airtight as the old, bulky NASA Apollo/Shuttle suits.

  • Actually..... The US suits have a SAFER system that uses nitrogen gas. If the tether breaks that can fart their way back to safety.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplified_Aid_For_EVA_R

  • Inside the ISS I would imagine. So the atmosphere inside the space station while they were in space. Or inside a stinky spacesuit, perhaps.

Just me, but compared to Alexei Leonov, Ed White, Buzz Aldrin, the CMP's of Apollo's 15-17, Shuttle/MIR, Shuttle/HST, Shuttle/ISS and ISS itself, I really don't consider standing on the 'porch' of Polaris Dawn a true "Spacewalk". Yes, technically it was an 'EVA' but more on the lines of Rusty Schweikart's 'test' of the PLSS on Apollo 9. PD popped their Hatch, Isaacman went up to the porch and took a look around for a bit from that vantage point, then went back inside and sealed everything back up. It verified the ability of Crew Dragon, the new Suits, and was a Milestone for Commercial Spacecraft/Missions to perform their Prime Objectives. Not taking anything away from that.

It's defined as physical activity outside of the craft. They were out as far as their hips at one point and waving their arms around, so I guess it's in accordance with the definition.

I know what you mean, though.

It's never been an accurate description as no walking ever takes place anyway.

Rule #1  There is no farting in space!

In a sci-fi story I read many years ago, two folks one human and the other a furry sentient creature were trapped together in an airtight bubble. They needed to travel across the transparent bubble in order to reach a control panel that would allow them to escape the trap. The highly intelligent critter grabbed his human companion tightly on his left arm and proceeded to fart them slowly across the bubble and reached the panel, thus facilitating their escape! 😜

I had a thought!  I wonder if there is such a thing like an old fashion Air Wick device that isn't an air freshener but a  substance that has no odor but absorbs any odors present.  Maybe a small container that an astronaut could take outside the space station open it and take a sample?  Bring it back in a give a sniff?
