Do you see blue color on covers and shocks before you left click ?

Nope. The nose gear turns blue when clicking on it.

Did you do this?

Go to Settings - General - flight Interface - Under Cockpit Camera set Cockpit Interaction System to 'Legacy'

Should no longer show blue highlight.

Also if you go to settings - controls - keyboard - search for Take Control of Character should be Shift C by default 

You have a lot going on here.

First  right click the mouse to freeze the camera

then use the keyboard and arrow keys to move around the a/c, not the mouse. Check your keyboard settings - should be the standard  WADS keys and arrow keys.  You will be able to get close enough for the cursor to change to hand and then you can click the mouse.

Once all is cleared - shift C enters the cockpit

Shift C takes me into the cockpit and out again.

Okay. I think the problem is I have never used or setup for WADS. Where do I set that up?

It should be the default, but it's under:

Settings - Controls - Keyboard - Player Character - Movement

Move Forward, Move Backward, Strafe Left, Strafe Right

If you begin with MSFS 2024, it would help a lot to see the blue color like on my picture above.
General>Flight Interface > Show Preflight Pins > On !

I've found if you middle click your mouse wheel it alternates between looking and the ability to click stuff vs walking around.

I really hate the walk-around "feature."

I believe your issue is you are only interacting using the mouse.  You should be using the W A S D keys on the keyboard to move your avatar about.

The view is controlled by the mouse, but not the avatar movement.  Due to that, as others have said, I think you are not close enough to the item you are trying to toggle.  My clue was when you said you could only look around the pilot's side of the aircraft.

You can also try this. During some flights, not in vr, after a few minutes, the mouse would stop reacting.

No matter what, It just wouldn't work.

After looking at this video, and making the adjustments as per the video, I have not had that trouble again.
