TOLD and OLOD MSFS2020

Featured Replies

I would have taken that screenshot today, Vaughan......if I had not woken up to serious PC issues. I attempted to load MSFS 2020 this morning, and halfway through the loading process I encountered the "blue screen of death". That took me by surprise, but I was hoping that it was only a temporary glitch. Sadly, that did not prove to be the case. I tried to load MSFS 2020 several times, and all of those ended up with automatic reboots of the system.

Fearing the worst (that my PC was about to suffer a catastrophic failure), I conducted the following tests.....

  • removed the handful of addons that I had installed over the past couple of days
  • removed the Community folder
  • ran the Memory Diagnostics tool
  • reduced the frequency of my RAM from 3600Mhz to 3466Mhz (this has corrected one or two boot failures in the past)
  • ran a CPU stress test
  • removed the overclock on my CPU (back to 3.8Ghz from 4.5Ghz)
  • checked the integrity of the MSFS 2020 Steam files
  • Ran the system file checker to see if any files needed to be repaired
  • Ran a disk integrity test on the C:\ drive
  • loaded Assetto Corsa to see if it happened with this software (it did)

The last test seemed to suggest that MSFS 2020 was not the source of the problem. Whatever it was, I could boot back up to the desktop every time, and it seemed to be OK doing relatively simple things like browsing the internet.

.....and then suddenly my PC decided not to reboot at all. I saw the message "attempting automatic repair", but that did not work. At this point I was seriously wondering whether I needed to start looking for a new PC.

However, the handful of options that I was offered after the failed "automatic repair" included a reinstallation of Windows 10. Now, this was something that I really did not want to do if at all possible, but in the end I had no choice. I needed to bite the bullet, and hope that the problem was due to corrupted Windows files, or something else that could be resolved by wiping the slate clean.

So I did it. I had backups of the Community and Steam/Official folders, but I tested MSFS 2020 with empty folders first. It loaded fine. Then I added the Steam/Official folders and files. It loaded fine. So I then added the Community folder, crossed my fingers, and loaded it again. It reached the main menu screen without problems. I reinstalled the PMDG 737-600.....and to my great relief, the controller settings appear to have been retained. I have loaded the plane three separate times now, and everything worked flawlessly.

To be honest, I am still nervous. I have no idea what really caused the problem in the first place, which has left me somewhat paranoid!!

Sorry for the off topic post, Vaughan.....but I wanted to provide a proper explanation as to why you do not have that screenshot yet

Have you tried turning off the  online option, Bing and PG off? Do that, save the changes, and turn them back on again, and save the changes. That normally fixes the problem for me.

i would go to Data and ensure you have selected unlimited data.

I would also clear your cache.

See if that solves the problem.

Your problem is not unique.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and additional information for testing.

“Have you tried turning off the  online option, Bing and PG off?
Do that, save the changes, and turn them back on again, and save the changes.
That normally fixes the problem for me.”

Initially Bing and PG were Off on my last test so they now they remain Off.
Now I turned Online Functionality Off.
Saved.
Quit to Desktop.
Rebooted PC.

Started MSFS2020.
Tested at this point.
Still limited LOD (same problem).
I saved a screenshot.

Next:
Started MSFS2020.
Turned Online Functionality On.
Bing Data Off / PG still Off.
Saved.
Tested at this point.
Still limited LOD (same problem).
I saved a screenshot.

Ah, so the Bing photoscenery was disabled in your first screenshot? No wonder the scenery looked strange!

I can see you’re having significant issues with the graphics.  How is your internet bandwidth?  Something in your system is preventing graphics from being rendered properly. And you’re not having hardware issues? Have you benchmarked your graphics card?

Relax and pace yourself so MSFS doesn’t drive you insane. I promise you that you’ll find the solution. It takes time.

My simulator is unplayable now because of severe stuttering issues. It happened out of nowhere but I won’t bother with it now.

I started MSFS2020 and I got the intro music (not good) and my settings were changed.

During the startup intro I got a screen with recommended setting (Ultra) for my PC setup (screenshot).

Also during the intro I got a screen comparing what I should see with Satellite Data Streaming On and No World Streaming (screenshot).
Meaning : Satellite Data Streaming On = Bing On and No World Streaming = Bing Off.

I took a flight with On-Line On, Bing On and PG Off (screenshot).

I have got this after i installed FS2024 on my System in November..

also all Settings in 2020 was lost. Setup FS2020 new, After then No more troubles with 2020/2024. i am Running Both sims now.

Looks like offline scenery to me. Not sure what the question is - are you saying that your install simply doesn’t show you PG scenery even if you turn it on?

Yes and you say in the first post you don’t use PG normally.

With PG turned off, it looks like that. What’s the issue? I can’t tell from your posts.

Ok you aren’t even getting the offline scenery correctly it looks like.

is the top screenshot you and the bottom one someone else? Then I can see that yours clearly looks broken.

Seems like hardware or bandwidth related? He tried everything in the past few days and the scenery still looks bad.

Ok, I see you read some more of my posts.

"Ok you aren’t even getting the offline scenery correctly it looks like.  "

Now, what do you mean by offline scenery?

"is the top screenshot you and the bottom one someone else?"

Which set of screenshots are you looking at?

All screenshots that I posted here are my own.

In my first post I did not say anything about On-Line.
My first post was just trying to get some additional information.

In the topics second post by filoy:
He drew a red line on his two screenshots to show where Distance was a problem.

My reply and screenshot to his post was simply to show the same Distance / terrain detail problem:
Example of my TLOD problem above New York City.
To show I was seeing the same Distance problem.

Somehow distance became confused with a building quality problem.

Just for a quick follow up.

I was talking about a distance problem ... when buildings / terrain detail go missing.
