Is 2024 purely cloud based?

Also. this 1.5 terabyte file size just indicates laziness on the part of the dev. As if they couldn't break the installer down to customize what is actually installed. I purchased Premium deluxe. Doesn't mean i necessarily want to install all the aircraft associated with it.

Yes this is exactly what they have done. Yes it’s not working right now because the marketplace is still not done.

Once the market place is released, you should be able to do exactly what you’re asking for.

Fully aware that I'm going against the popular rhetoric to bash the cloud streaming model here but honestly if the menu system is that slow and laggy for you that it is running at 2fps and then crashe

No. The interface, UI, menus, executable code, base data, etc are all executed and stored locally. In fact, no sim code at all is executed in the cloud. However, content is streamed. In MSFS 2020

  • Pretty much entirely server based and you are therefore at the mercy of the Server and the internet. Enjoy !

Do we know for sure that MSFS2024 needs to stream considerably more than the scenery - once we get the option to store airports, airplanes and world/city updates locally? I'm inclined to think not. In that case - is there a bit of hysteria going on about the bandwidth requirements for 2024 vs 2020? Honest question! And not specifically directed at @JonathanC 🙂

While I’m not the developer, and can’t speak from inside knowledge, they did say in multiple videos that a huge benefit of the streamed model is the massive reduction in updates.

we all hated how long 2020 would take to update and it updated practically every 30-45 days with dozens of GBs

In 2024, the new architecture makes this no longer necessary and updates and indeed the install are super fast.

I honestly think and agree with many people that the sim isn’t fully done yet (see the lack of Market place for eg) and especially stuff around streaming (and career…). But free flight and other modes are working well.

Call it a beta or alpha if that makes it better for you, but I think most reasonable people agree that the current state of the sim isn’t what was promised and they have committed to making it what they promised.

Whether you believe they will or won’t is up to up, and the real answer will only be known in some months. I’m happy playing the current version with the limitations, but totally get those who’d rather wait for the “real deal”.

Indeed. I've reinstalled the sim a few times since release. The whole installation seems to be less than 15GB on my SSD (vs nearly 200GB in MSFS2020 IIRC), so I'm not complaining.

I can agree on this.

I'm enjoying the streaming life lol. When the marketplace is up and running I will download some of my favorite default planes. I have third party scenery for the places I frequent and that's on the hard drive. I've taken some time to test live data consumption of 2024 and found that most of the time, it was single digit mb/s during flight.

Losing the main menu and what should be local settings because the servers go down is bad design, full stop.
