Is 2024 purely cloud based?

Featured Replies

I guess for those that live in 3rd world countries like the US, having good internet might be a problem…. Living in a more advanced country, having good internet, streaming is not an issue….

Fully aware that I'm going against the popular rhetoric to bash the cloud streaming model here but honestly if the menu system is that slow and laggy for you that it is running at 2fps and then crashe

No. The interface, UI, menus, executable code, base data, etc are all executed and stored locally. In fact, no sim code at all is executed in the cloud. However, content is streamed. In MSFS 2020

  • Pretty much entirely server based and you are therefore at the mercy of the Server and the internet. Enjoy !

However, that’s without any scenery.  You need the scenery to make MSFS what it is. And that takes …

around 3 Petabytes (3000 TB).

Do we know for sure that MSFS2024 needs to stream considerably more than the scenery - once we get the option to store airports, airplanes and world/city updates locally? I'm inclined to think not. In that case - is there a bit of hysteria going on about the bandwidth requirements for 2024 vs 2020? Honest question! And not specifically directed at @JonathanC 🙂

I just checked with the Windows Data usage, and MSFS 2020 has already used 163 GB of data since January 1.

I really don't think that the bandwidth is much of a problem. Since I constantly had "low bandwidth" messages with my German provider (t-online) with my 250Mbit line, I decided years ago to use a VPN. Even if I use a Japanese IP and get maybe only a 50mbit download with abysmal latency, I never had problems with either 2020 or 2024. Textures and aircraft load fast, PG looks good. I haven't looked up the data usage. Might do that later in the day.

How do you know how much is used by the sim? No trick question or sarcasm 🙂

I've got a custom Unifi network which gives an overview of all data downloaded from various sources on my home network (PC, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad etc). In November last year a new source appeared: Akamai.net (company specialized in content delivery network which apparently has a partnership with Azure). I suspect that everything streamed by  MSFS2024 is via Akamai. If this is true, MSFS2024 has used 10.6GB in January (vs a total of 521GB of total downloads from all sources). I usually sim for several hours every day - on average.

Did you leave your home, ask for refund and move to amish way of living? LOL

Well, I have it on good authority that Asobo and Microsoft are planning - for everyone who prefers the "Amish way of gaming" - to release MSFS 2024 on 250,000 floppy disks. No cloud required! Installation will take about 2 years.

I just posted a reply but for some reason it disappeared Hope this isn't a duplicate.  Just go to Windows Settings, Network and Internet/ Status/Datausage

Ah, didn't know that, thanks! In that case MSFS2024 used 189GB during last 30 days. Interestingly the Map Enhancement mod downloaded 171GB.

And what about the rest of the 3000 TB?

That can be streamed .. Have no issues with that. The issue are the core files.. the ones that are time sensitive for data retrieval or repetitive enough that it is probably best held on the drive ..  a la msfs2020.

Also. this 1.5 terabyte file size just indicates laziness on the part of the dev. As if they couldn't break the installer down to customize what is actually installed. I purchased Premium deluxe. Doesn't mean i necessarily want to install all the aircraft associated with it.

Yes i know that eventually i should be able to download airports and aircraft. I would like to also see the essential repetitively used files locally stored as well.

Random out of the box alternative.

An alternative strategy is per-caching the files based on expected routing. Submit to the sim your flight plan and the flights  aircraft,  departure and destination airports are pre cached.

I hit my data cap for the first time, a year ago with 2020. I spend $30 more a month for unlimited data. It is obvious that 2024 will use even  more data than 2020.

Same here. I had hit my data cap in august last year if i remember correctly and it was due to MSFS2020 as well. I had to switch to Comcast highest tier and use their equipment for them to drop the cap.

I just paid the $30 a month for unlimited data, cause I use my own modem My data increased dramatically in June of last year. I thought there was some issue with Comcast, but never got any resolution.

Do you use PG, because you are using less data than I am.

I've had it off for the last week or so. Mostly. Just couldn't deal with the constant popping in of buildings/objects on approach when flying airliners.

I am going to try turning it off and see if my data usage goes down.

And in the very end 24999s floppy will give CRC error LOL
