What FPS should I expect?

Featured Replies

Trying XP12 after a while, and know that lots has changed. I'd like to get an idea of what FPS I can expect with the following system:

5800X3d
64GB Ram
4090
all NVME storage

I have a 4K screen and would like to run XP at the highest possible settings while still getting decent (35+) fps. I've played around with the settings, but either I go too low with great fps but poor visuals, or the other way around.

I'd appreciate someone with a similar system telling me what's a good setup to get the best combination of FPS and visuals.

Other notes: I will fly either the Zibo, Toliss 320, or Diamond DA 62. I don't have any third-party scenery yet. I have Traffic Global running but that's the only plugin I have.

Thanks all.

@JonathanC sorry. That us up to you. No two systems will ever get same results. You have to decide where too compromise and 4k will always be a killer. Laminar are still in process of optimising. But ever time we get improvement they add user demands and we back to square one.

Ok but what FPS are other people getting with similar systems? It’s not like the exact same hardware will give wildly different results, is it?

also, I’m running it on Windows 11 24h2 with the latest nvidia drivers

Anyone with a similar system care to comment?

Hello welcome to X-Plane. I will share some stats in my stats.

My system is Nvidia RTX 4090,  AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Res 5120x1440, HP Reverb G2 (no overclocking just stock). I only use 1 monitor.

I play in VR so I have 4 x MSAA because I can't stand simmering.  I can increase my FPS by going 2 x MSAA.

Running everything max should give you around 30 FPS but many of those high end setting are not worth the hit and does very little for flying the airplane.

Hi,

I run a 7950X3D on  a gigabyte X670e Aorus Master M/B. I have an Asus 4090 tuf with 24GB ram, 64GB DDR5 Ram @ 6,000, with a 2TB Samsung 990 pro NVME on a Samsung 75" UHDTV @ 2K (forget 4K) and I still get stutters and are unable to run X-Plane 12 with full sliders right!!!  and this is without showing the Zibomod 3D flight deck... X-Plane 12 is a resource hog!!!

It's not so much the FPS but the flickers/stutters that happen! Even with locked frames at 30fps and monitors locked at 30hz and not dipping below those numbers. I can even remove frame lock and they jump into the upper 40's... yet I still get flickers/stutters.

I am running XP12 on what is now a basic system with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10500 CPU @ 3.10GHz   3.10 GHz w 16GB RAM GPU is an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super at 8GB. Monitor is a basic LG HD Monitor 24 inch. Not 4k but what I see and get is fine by me.

So I get between 38 and 60 FPS dependant on scenery complexity or weather. All my sliders are at max except shadows and I am using 4MSAA. When they loads are higher for scenery or weather neither appear to affect the way the sim and models run at all which is smooth and quickly with no lags jitters or other slowdown indications. And that is all I need!

I have noted some developers (some) seem to have untidy underlying coding for their models (lets say lots of scripts to do things that you may not really want to use at all) I keep my plugins or LUA to a minimum, that is what I want - which is basically only a ground handling tool, and LIVETRAFFIC  I mostly use default scenery and I have no shader or other weather manipulators - just what the sim does. The more complex ones just take longer to load on intial load and when using the scripts to say change a livery or something else esoteric. High end models run as well as or seamlessly as do simple ones, think say a TOLISS Airbus v the Cessna 172.

Hello; this is the first time I have been back at Avsim in over a year but I will try and help you with a mini guide.

So my system first of all is 4090, 64GB RAM, 7950X, LG-C1 G-sync at 4k (3840X2160) 120 hz.

I actually quit simming for a while, and I have come back to the mess of MSFS, so I thought I would see how XP12 was getting on, and I have fully migrated over to it. It 'just works'.

Now these settings work for my system. The minimum FPS I get is 30 ish fully loaded with a 737 at EGLL as an example. Mostly I get 38FPS locked which equates to 114FPS (more about that later in this guide!)

I do run plugins and traffic. I also use simheaven and autoortho, so if you are just using default, in theory your frames should be higher.  I will include pictures below.

So first of all, I use the following Nividia Control panel settings:-

1.) https://ibb.co/CwtxX0m

2.) https://ibb.co/ZXmpkCb

3.) https://ibb.co/JpwpVZk

Then, I use the following XP12 settings:- Note at 4K MSAAX2 is sufficient and will give you a good FPS boost. Also, render distance to High instead of Ultra gives a FPS boost with very very minimal graphical alteration.

1.) https://ibb.co/XzP8frk

Then I use RTSS to limit the XP12 frames to 38 (reason is below). This Helps to create steady frame pacing, which is imperative to eliminate stutters.

1.) https://ibb.co/MMHsk7T

Now that you have those settings all set, get Lossless Scaling over at steam for a couple of £$. My Lossless scaling settings are as per:-

1.) https://ibb.co/hs1pCy7

Make sure that V-Sync is off everywhere, this helps totally reduce input lag.

My windows settings:-

1.) https://ibb.co/gtD9Wsr

2.) https://ibb.co/jGp66hQ

My XP12 plugins:-

1.) https://ibb.co/FhVPWTg

So by doing this, I am able to achieve 90% of the time the locked frames of 38, super smooth frame pacing, which when trebled by lossless scaling app creates frames of 114. This creates the illusion of SUPER smooth gameplay. This frame lock also stops me going over the refresh rate of 120, and allows a little headroom for frame spikes.  It also allows G-Sync to remain enabled, further smoothing the image and preventing tearing. And when the frames do drop below 38, it is ok because if they drop down to 30 for example, 30X3 = 90 is what I am seeing and G-Sync is taking care of it. It is SUPER smooth. Artifacts? very very minimal, nothing that I notice in the real world.

Anyways I hope this explains it a bit and helps you out.

Ian

Forgot to mention I do use head tracking with tobi, and this makes it super smooth.

@Ianrivaldosmith Your excellent post helped me get steady FPS of 38-45 without framegen, and I easily get 80+ fps with framegen on. Thank you very much.

Are you seriously having all sliders to the right? 8xMSAA and all objects and distance to the max? No wonder. That should only work with a C172 and outside of heavy airport sceneries. I would not expect any sim to be able to run flawelessely in every situations without stutters at max settings and using complex airliners and with every kind of weather…

Hi,

I don't run it at 8xMSAA, it would be unflyable! I also can't run XP12 in 4K without additional flickers/stutters and this trying to run one monitor. Yet I can run MS2020 with seven monitors, three at 4K on the ultra setting, three at 1366 and one at 800. MS2020 gives me smoother performance with all of that connected than XP12 with one monitor.

Hi

Ah because you wrote all sliders are at max except shadows…and I know that MSFS is better optimized but can you really run it smoothly with max LOD and what was the other slider with a number (terrain or detail?)? And it is smooth over 30 fps even at heavy sceneries? That would surprise me a bit tbh even if it may be better optimized.
