Overclocking with new Nvidia app

Gained 118 MHz on GPU clock, +200 MHz on VRAM.

I'm not sure if that leads to a discernable improvement with my RTX 3060 Ti, but it looks good on paper. GPU temp still nice and chilly at 53C with utilization up to 91%.

Hat tip to IslandSimPilot via his latest video.

Is in-app overclocking going to become something that everyone does, as part of the standard MSFS User Experience? Or is it something that sounds nice but doesn't deliver much real value?

Opinions?

I never OC a video card - its not worth it imo - thats a min OC prob will be stable - one OC thats just a bit to much can fry your video card I know I did it some years ago and would never do it again

Some will say nah its ok - I wouldn't do it - I have an RTX 4080Super OC factory and thats the way its going to stay - your call - be very careful

Apparently using the Nvidia app to overclock an Nvidia card doesn't void the warranty, for what that's worth...

I’ll probably try it when I get the app a bit later. I do t expect much impact on performance though.

I know that  - OC doesn't buy you much of anything so why take chance - OC can make an unstable operating system real fast also - your call

If it’s unstable I suppose it’s easy to disable it. But I agree with you, there’s probably not going to be a huge performance boost, unless one is very GPU-limited.

Yes, one click to disable.

Its not one click once the damage is done theres no going back

What sort of damage are you talking about? Does this reasoning apply to CPU and RAM overclocking as well?

No the video card - I didn't OC it much when I did I got a bunch of video glitches on my monitor immediately - not good It was an EVGA Nvidia card cant remember the model - they may have better protection now

The answer is to just buy a fast video card such as your 4090 I believe you have not sure what you have - I think you mentioned it on one of your YT videos - which are very good by the way

By OC a graphic card you almost gain nothjng. It is not worth it.

I tested it a lot and gaining 0,5-2% FPS was the most I got using P3D and MSFS 2020.

Multiple companies OC their cards to sell them for hundfeds of dollars/euros more.

You better spent that money on a faster CPU. That makes a difference.

In my decades of experience overclocking GPUs I can categorically state this is incorrect, I've seen improvements of up to 20% depending on the Game/Sim when adding an overclock. Racing Sims have benefited me massively from overclocking as I've been able too add higher graphical settings which improve the immersion, so if you do it correctly by thoroughly testing each overclock stage/setting as you go then Yes you can gain something.

Now I'm not sure on the nVidia App, I've always used external programs (MSI Afterburner for example) and in the past MSFS itself never liked overclocks as the Sim would often CTD although IIRC I haven't tried since I got my 3070ti...may be worth a play one day.

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

moving this over to the hardware section

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

In my experience, MSFS becomes unstable *very* quickly when the GPU is overclocked, leading to frequent CTDs.

When I first purchased my RTX 3080, I fried the card with an overclock. I contacted Alienware and told I them I didn't know what I was doing and apologized. They sent me a new card (I got lucky). In my view, the gains of overclocking do not outweigh the risks.  Leave the card alone!
