AMD 9900X3D with RTX 4090 and MSFS 2024 and MSFS 2020

Update: I used Process Lasso to move all processes except MSFS and Fenix to the frequency CCD. The AMD chipset drivers and Windows Game Bar ensured that the sim and plane remained on the 3D v-cache CCD. On Vatsim, arriving at a busy Gatwick, things seemed smoother. I was maintaining 65-70 fps. I shifted the processes back and forth as best I could while taxiing, and sequestering the tasks on the second CCD gained me about 5 fps (=2-3 fps without frame gen). This might not seem like much, but the difference can be felt at such low fps.

I've discovered that simply turning on "high performance" mode in the Control Panel power settings (not the new Windows 11 settings) will still prioritise the cache ccd for the sim, while leaving the frequency ccd open for other tasks, so there's no need for Process Lasso. It's smoother than "balanced" mode, with higher fps in demanding scenarios with lots of background tasks. It consumes more power, but you can make use of all 16 cores in the 9950x3D.

In summary: if you run a lot of background tasks, my advice is to get the 9950x3D and turn on "high performance" mode. If you just run the sim on its own, with no Vatsim, Simapppro, Stream Deck etc., you should just get the 9800x3D. The 9900x3D might be better than the 9800x3D  if you have a lot of background tasks (and you run it in "high performance" mode), but will be worse than the 9800x3D if you are just running the sim, as it has 2 fewer 3D v-cache cores.

MSFS2020 - Ryzen 9950x3d, RTX 4090, 64GB RAM

I'm almost exclusively flying in VR on MSFS2020 using VATSIM and streaming/recording with OBS. Just upgraded to the 9950x3d in order to achieve better performance using 3d cache cores for the SIM and "offloading" the rest (VPilot, Navigraph, OBS with its plugins, etc.) to non-cache frequency cores. I would greatly appreciate some tips and tricks on how to optimally set up my CPU, since I'm a bit of a newbie on this topic (Game Mode on/off, Win Power settings performance/balanced, etc.).

Greatly appreciated

Puzzled as to why this thread has not been moved to the hardware section as the mods have done with other similar threads.

Can't give much detail as I'm waiting for my 9950X3D to show up finally later this week, however I can give some input on the power settings based on some content I've seen.  First, make sure you have the latest AMD chipset drivers installed (get them from AMD to make sure), then make sure the power plan in Windows is set to Balanced.  Do NOT change it to high performance etc.  AMD fixed core parking issues in the last 1-2 driver updates and the drivers will properly manage the cores but ONLY if you have the power plan in Balanced.  If it's in anything else it apparently won't work right and you'll have to do tricks like process lasso etc. to fix it apparently.

How do you make sure apps like Volanta, etc. are offloaded only to the non-vcache CCD?   I know Process Lasso could be used, but, PL isn't ideal...

Unfortunately I can't help much with that.  Never bothered with PL so far.  I'm probably just going to install drivers, set the power plan, and hope.  I figure worst case I'll boot into BIOS and shut off the 2nd CCD for sim use only if I have issues with core parking not behaving correctly with the sims while having Volanta etc open.  Basically turning it into a 9800X3D with faster boost clocks which should still have better performance in theory then vs an actual 9800.
