Max distance from player aircraft to contrails?

currently in the latest SU2 Beta I don't see any aircraft, I've set them to Real Time Online with Air Traffic set to ULTRA in the options, the EFB shows plenty of aircraft in my vicinity - however the G1000 shows absolutely nothing and I see absolutely nothing when according to the EFB a plane is right on top of me...something's broken.

My G1000 shows AI aircraft when using the default traffic and I can see the planes when they are not far. Not sure about the distance but I would say around 3 miles, if more I don't see them. They need to fix this. Also saw one contrail at 35000ft (checked with LNM) when I was at 2000ft. And I see default traffic planes landing, with FSLTL they never land. It's a mess on taxiways though, with planes on top of other planes and other blocking the taxiways.

So I just confirmed in 2020 Contrails are visible for ~35 miles... I managed to capture a screenshot of the TCAS on my PFD and the associated Contrail from AI ~35 miles away...  I also got some shots of Contrails while I was taxiing out which again, I have never seen that in 2024...

Nice. From my tests visibility of strobe and nav lights with really tiny plane model was till cca 25 miles. But yeah contrails can be higher. I was mainly focusing on lights and plane model how far I can see them in Msfs20.

Pitty in Msfs24 as you are writing it is simply not working.

Yes, I've been paying a lot of attention to draw distance details in 2020 vs 2024 and I don't think I can see anything in 2024 beyond 3-5 miles whereas in 2020 I can see AI for ~12-15 miles where they become so small they disappear from view naturally.  Contrails are ~30-35 miles, AI lights are ~ 15 miles, AI ships are visible for a few miles below the aircraft even from cruise @FL350 and above.  I also have crystal clear textures for ~45 miles which is where the LOD seems to shift in 2020 which I "can" also get in 2024 but at the same time I can also have runway lines that are only clear for 20 feet at times so it's not consistent.

So LOD distances are WAY off in 2024 compared to 2020...  No contrails from the ground, no ships from cruise altitude, Contrails are barely visible in flight as are AI and AI lights and textures are "variable" but I have to check if that happens at locally stored airports as well.

This is a clear step backwards from 2020 to 2024 which Asobo really need to address.  I would take 2000x more texture details and less rocks to have more visible traffic of all types at greater draw distances...

Yes, Asobo cull all traffic at a close distance in 2024, so if there's no model, there's also no contrail.

I can only hope it's this way because they are focusing on overall FPS performance first, and when that's improved they will introduce increasing the distance and LOD on air- and sea traffic. Would make kind of sense to do it like that. Wish Asobo would be a bit more transparent about their plans with AI traffic.

So I am quite curious.  Did Asobo increase the visibility of contrails and airplanes model in SU2 beta or still not ?   I have not got the time to do some more testing recently 😞 Was busy as hell in my job and around the house and garden. So no time to fly in MSFS24 at all.

I wanted to do some testing during CTP on Vatsim but Real life first 😞

Anyway I am quite curious for guys that are flying CTP on Vatsim with MSFS24 and SU2 beta with AIG or FSTL model matching how it is for them ?  If they see something in cruise around them or not at all.   I think they should be able to see at least 10 planes maybe more around them within those 25nm as it is in MSFS20. But if MSFS24 is still the same and max distance you can see some planes and contrails when in cruise , is still those cca 5-8 miles , than I would be word not allowed. Such huge event where you should see a lot of planes around you and nothing...

Nope. Even at few miles of distance, contrails are not visible. They just don't work in FS2024.

You are definitively not alone, it IS an immersion killer. Like many other things related to AI traffic. If I am not wrong, some aspects of this totally borked LOD behaviour seems to be fixed in SU2, but others have to chime in as I am not in the beta.

In general, AI traffic is ridiculous in MSFS2024, they somehow managed to get it even worse compared to MSFS2020, and it was already bad in the "old" sim. Unbelievable. Especially considering the fact that they invested quiet some resources in getting good looking AI models including some textures of the most prominent airlines, I do absolutely not get why they invest so little effort in a good AI traffic engine (including LODs etc.).

I totally agree. I know some people don't like my opinion, but since FSX/P3D ai traffic has become worse. Even in nearly 5 years since MSFS appeared, they were not able to provide an acceptable ai engine (LODs incl.). What does it help if we have pretty good models (AIG, FSLTL etc) and all these advanced ATC add-ons if the visible traffic is such a mess.

I remember traffic spotting for hours in P3D.  In MSFS(s) it's more like Landing gear spotting in the hopes of not witnessing belly landing after belly landing by these poor AI pilots... Then if they do have gear do they have main AND fronts?  Probably not for more than 100 ft LOL.
