Spread FS 2024 accross 2 physical disks...

Featured Replies

I tried all possible configurations when installing first MSFS 2020 and then FS 2024.

With FS 2024 I had to learn "it's way" but nowadays I can easily move the "Packages" to wherever I want in 5 min, including the moving of the Community.., Official.. and Streamed Content folders.

Since I now have a full nvme2 disk dedicated to MSFS **only**, I decided to try moving the install there through the application management options in Xbox, and found that it performed with some stutters here & there...

Hmmm, I reverted to the default install folders under my system C : folder and then created again the F:\MSFS on the new FS2024-dedicated nvme2 disk.

After editing UserCfg.opt and in the very last entry change it to : InstalledPackagesPath "F:\MSFS"

I then manually MOVED all of the "C:\Users\<my win11 user>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages" subfolders directly into "F:\MSFS", leaving the CACHE and all other stuff in the original C : install

This way I not only solve problems when trying to install addons with longish names, or copying their folders into the "Community" or "Community2024" folders under "F:\MSFS" but leaving the "ROLLINGCACHE.CCC" file in a different disk appears to also have some positive impact in terms of performance.

After doing this I always test FS 2024 in the very same scenario and the micro stutters I get when everything is in the same disk are gone.

So, my honest recommendation is that when installing FS 2024, and if you have more than one physical disk...

1) Install the game through Xbox to the default location, under C :

2) Create, say, a "<drive letter>\MSFS" under "<drive letter>" where the leter is whatever descriptor your separate disk has ( "F" in my case )

3) Make a backup and then edit "C:\Users\<your win user>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\UserCfg.opt" and in the last line (as of this version of FS 2024 SU 4) change the "InstalledPackagesPath" to the path for the new "MSFS" folder, in my case it looks like InstalledPackagesPath "F:\MSFS", and then move the contents of the original "Packages" folder into that folder.

In my case the contents of "F:\MSFS" will be:

F:\MSFS\Community,  F:\MSFS\Community2024, F:\MSFS\Official2020, F:\MSFS\Official2024 and F:\MSFS\StreamedPackages

That's all, and after various experience, in my case it surely makes the sim run smoother, and makes updates through "Xbox Insider Hub" flawless.

Or, alternatively and with more flexibility, use the very nice freeware MSFS Addons Linker, and install your add-ons anywhere you choose, organized the way you want.  The linker only places a tiny virtual folder reference into your packages folder pointing to the actual location of the physical folder, and only when you have that scenery selected as active.

I have my rather large scenery collections for FS20/24 organized (on separate dedicated SSDs) by region, country, and in the case of the US by state as well.  Before a flight, I go in and activate only the sceneries I'm intending to use on that flight by ticking the checkbox, and then go fly.  The sim does not have to index all 500+ sceneries when starting that way, reducing load time considerably.

You should install to a RAID array!! It's time!

after many years with apps and games that take up a lot of space, I’ve always installed apps to a separate drive.

and like Bob said, addon linker makes it trivial to move things around even further.

XToolbox and XOrganizer are similar for XP (tho they’re payware (and worth it!)).

I like to keep as much as possible of the sim on my largest and fastest NVME, which is my C drive.

My nerd-brain likes those 7000 MB/s sequential reads and 952148 IOPS random reads. 🤓

Anyone remember SmartDrv?

Being able to load those old dos games to run completely in RAM was amazing.

ANOTHER VOTE for AddOn Linker Jose- simply superb!

C

Have to check it again but I have so few addons, no sceneries only a couple helis, gliders and 5 airliners that I believe it's really not necessary in my case.

Yeah - you’d have to go RAID 10 to have any extra speed AND redundancy.
