It’s just a flight game.

Really nice idea, and I'd love to see more stuff like this, but at first glance it doesn't look amazingly well done in terms of textures and appearances. That may just be the video though. I'll probably try a copy as long as it's not pricey.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used

Fair - I did see that in the vid, too. But I contrast this with the line drawings or sketches usually shown in books, and the fact that it can be visited via Hi Fi helo, and that brings it together for me 😁👍

and, it’s less than $10 AND covers 20+ separate sites.

there’s a couple freeware’s on their site, too. Gonna have to check those out myself

While this is an interesting idea, I think the real potential with historical stuff like this would be creating historical missions. There are modern day missions like the re-creation of Capt. Sully's Miracle on the Hudson landing, but imagine similar challenges set in the early days of aviation with customized scenery that depicts the buildings and airports of the time, similar to how the Stranger Things missions depict the fictional town of Hawkins, IN.

Also, the nice thing about this kind of structure is you aren't taking any "realism" out of free flight... the scenery is contained within the missions so you don't need to disable it when you want to fly in the modern world. Photography challenges are a nice way to add a free flight element without taking over the base sim.

For an extreme example, imagine flying as a carrier pigeon during WWI! Maybe with a gamey element of avoiding predators and gunfire to make it a bit more interesting 😁

Charlie, it’s an MSFS 2024 scenery.

we talk about addons in here all the time, right?

not to mention the fact that I’m specifically referencing MSFS 2024’s unprecedented world realism. So, in fact , this post is more about the sim itself than most posts here. 🤙

As a bit of a history nerd, projects like this really pique my interest.

When the default world scenery is good enough for this, the possible applications seem endless (even beyond flight sim):

That sounds fascinating, UrgentSiesta! The idea of incorporating historical elements into flight simulation is really exciting. I can't wait to see how this evolves!

I’m sure some people would be tempted to land the Joby aviation electric taxi in the middle of the fort and then be worshipped as a god by its naive confused occupants.

For anyone interested in Iron Age hill forts, or  hill top villages at least there’s a good recreation of one on its original site south of Cardigan, Wales.

Or they might make lots of holes in you, not worth the risk IMHO.

We have been speaking of such (period) historical experiences in our SIMs since many years, but some of these expectations seem to be finally coming to fruition in MSFS.

With either present (or enhanced scenery, RedWing airports being one example), these ideas are indeed interesting, if you’re a history buff (myself being definitely so, at least, within the realm of aviation…)…

I would love to land my 727-100 (or 737-100) into a realistic looking (period) LaGuardia airport or Frankfurt airport…with no danger (hopefully) of making lots of holes in the fuselage of my aircraft…🙂…as is possible with this above (specific) adventure…

I'd certainly like to see a few of my favourites as they were back in the day, and even better if the surroundings were done the same way.

I'm kinda envious of today's youth, in the sense that they will be able to use Google Earth/Streetview almost like a time machine as they grow older. Plenty of places now have maybe 15 years of history you can flip back through in streetview, which means if you're only around that sort of age you'll be able to go back through your entire life, from childhood onwards, and see how your own bit of the world has changed, and also have access to the places you maybe never got to at the time.

Hey, if AI ever gets to this point, there's no reason why they couldn't really go for the whole time machine concept as part of the package. Imagine being able to wander the streets of London as Pepys saw them, or go all the way back and watch the Parthenon being built.

And then we can argue about "is it a game, or a chariot simulator" <grin>

I'm up to MSFS2024 Chariot Level 4, and the new boss became North Windbag. He wants to rip me off as soon as I start a flight 😞
